We've spent two days now listening to various theories as to why the Democrats were taken to the woodshed on Tuesday night; none that I've heard have really explained the defeat in total. Poor liberal turnout, the despicable Wellstone pep rally, a lack of focus and message by the liberal party, and other various theories, have been bandied about ad nauseum. Now it's time for the most intellectual board on the web, Free Republic, to weigh in.
I know some stupid Democrats and some stupid Communists but they are mutually exclusive.
Bill Clinton is evil. He sold the soul of the Democratic Party to special interests whose interests were self-serving and without staying power. The Democratic leadership became Clinton clones with all of his baggage. What this election has shown quite clearly is that without his hands on the levers Clinton has no value anymore...he is just an empty suit....he was always an empty suit but most Democrats in 1991 were too afraid of President Bush to take him on. Clinton got the money and the crooks took over the Donkey.
If those of us in the liberal wing of the party can't get the party back we have no one to blame this time except ourselves for letting the charlatans bamboozle the public for more than 15 years...if we have another bozo who wants to smooze at Hilton Head this winter he better not expect to win more than a brass hat formerly used for a spitoon.
If we can't dismantle the Clinton 'mystique' now then we will never do so. Hilary and Bill forced Andrew Cuomo out of the race for Governor and hand picked Carl McCall. Frankly speaking I like Carl and he is a good man and a decent human being...and he was told not to wrap the Clinton mantle about him...but the Clintons draped themselves anyway. Would Andrew won against Pataki? No...and Carl would have done better without Carville/Clinton/Chucky.
That said this is a great opportunity for the Democrats to regroup and stand up for what gave us years of governance in the tradition of Harry Truman and Hubert Humphrey. We can still represent the working class even though 'labor' is dressing pretty well these days.
Why did we get our butts kicked? We deserved it for pretending the Clinton years were valuable. Payback has arrived and it will cleanse the party of the despicable trash that litters our halls. This was good medicine for the Democrats and we will recover and restore some dignity to the Donkey. We have some old fashioned Democrats who have managed to savage the Illinois Republican Crime Syndicate and if the old guard like the Daleys, Cuomos can forget they ever slept with the Clinton gang we will come out of this very well...Tom Harkin should replace Dippy Daschle and if Nancy Pelosi gets to be Minority Leader then I want an invitation to the cat fight cause the loser will be Hilary...marketh my words. And pray with me that my wishful thinking is rewarded.
I'm not so certain about this statement in this area...when Gore was campaigning here for election 2000, the pro-lifers protested everyone of his 3 appearances...MOST of the protestors were D's and the bishop was present..
1. That was no funeral... it was the Plane Crash Jamboree. Anyone not a hopeless Clintonite who watched it saw it in either that gut-wrenching light or saw the scary reminders of Hitler's rise.
2. The RNC and Racicot deserve a great deal of kudos for their focussing on "Get Out The Vote" efforts in the competitive states and funding those efforts.
Many factors played a part in the long overdue dim meltdown. Among them are 9/11 or how popular Dubya is or the fact that the dims offer no reason to vote for them.
But I think this repudiation has been building in the hearts of the American people for at least two years.
It started with Florida. No matter how many times the dims have said that Dubya was "selected" and an illegitimate president etc., the American people were there and they know which side tried to hijack the 2000 election.
This attempted hijacking pissed us off and 2002 was the first time the American people had a chance to punish those who gave us 36 agonizing days of lies, obstruction and pre-meditated confusion, based on nothing but their lust for power.
We can read the Constitution and we understood when we read passages concerning no changing the rules after so many days before an election - in Florida the dims wanted to change the rules after the election. And we also understand equal protection concepts - if you are going to recount, you don't just recount in the counties that favor you, but in all the counties.
We also read Florida state statutes and Katherine Harris followed Florida law to the letter. It was the liberal Florida Supreme Court that tried to change the rules she was following - again, after the election.
And then we were told - just wait until we can recount these ballots with the liberal media in charge. Well, the subsequent recounts - supervised by liberal newspapers - still showed GWB as the winner.
And after all the allegations about blacks being disenfranchised in Florida, not one person would testify to that under oath despite serious pressure from the Jesse Jacksons and Mary Frances Berrys to do so.
So for the last two years, every time they sneered at GWB as the illegitimate president and whined "we wuz robbed" - I would say, "thank you - just keep it up." And then finally, in their arrogance and blindness, the dims provided the last straw in New Jersey where they treated NJ election laws like "suggestions" instead of rules.
Americans don't want leaders who ignore the rules or try to change them after the game is played. Those of us who were liberal in our twenties know that "the people didn't leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left the people" - and they still are.
