TOM'S RIVER, New Jersey (CNN) -- A teen-ager was sentenced Friday to life in prison for carjacking and killing a teacher, who managed to record secretly the attack and her desperate pleas to be spared.
Michael LaSane, 17, will not be eligible for parole for 30 years. He pleaded January 27 to felony murder in the death of Kathleen Weinstein, 45.

Or at least carry the gun- if I am on your jury after you have to use it, you will go free! The same for me. But there is no prosecutor anywhere (except, maybe, Texas) that would let either one of us on a jury.

He will be out of prison and she will still be dead. He needs an injection.

How can the police not notice, in all this time, that the other side of the tape also had been recorded? What on earth kind of police work is _that_?
Not exactly confidence-inspiring.

This required an expert??? What is telling is not the expertise of those in involved with criminal investigation, but what is deemed notworthy.
I forget how old I was when I learned to flip a tape over, but it must have been before I was eight, since I did it before my parents moved to Wisconsin.

LaSane said he bound her ankles and wrists with duct tape and drove away but returned and smothered her after fearing a nearby utility crew could hear her screaming. Before she was killed, Weinstein managed to activate a small, concealed tape recorder Kathleen should have carried a handgun, not a tape recorder.
Any woman who does not carry a handgun, may meet a similar fate.
We choose our own fate in matters like this.

Bookmark bump. "Just talk with the criminal, reason with him." Nope!

TOM'S RIVER, New Jersey (CNN) -- An audio tape left behind by a schoolteacher who secretly recorded a conversation with the carjacker who killed her is longer than originally thought, Ocean County Prosecutor Daniel J. Carluccio said Wednesday.
An audio tape expert discovered this week that Kathleen Weinstein flipped the tape over and recorded an additional 22 minutes, Carluccio said. Originally, police thought the tape lasted only 24 minutes.
This took an expert? "Beam me up."

To all the moderates in NJ and elsewhere, here is one example why I hate it when NJ candidates and politicians won't talk about the conceal and carry issue. End result--defenseless People are murdered.
Hi Coleus & thanks for the ping
Please never think of me as a moderate when it comes to the right to own firearms.(although I don't really think you do...) I want conceal & carry.(not holding my breath here)
Have a good night...

Let's see, what would you rather have in your pocket? A tape recorder to record your murder or a 45 revolver to prevent it?

Let's see, what would you rather have in your pocket? A tape recorder to record your murder or a 45 revolver to prevent it? For a pocket pistol, I'd think something like an NAA Guardian in .32NAA would be better than a .45 revolver. A .45 auto might be okay, but even the smallest of those are hardly pocket guns.

For a pocket pistol, I'd think something like an NAA Guardian in .32NAA would be better than a .45 revolver. I normally carry a 44 Special revolver with a 3 in barrel in my front pants pocket. It's "double-action only",and the hammer spur is bobbed so it doesn't catch on my pocket when I pull it out. All it takes is baggy clothing, and I wouldn't trade it for a truck load of 32ACP's.

He will be out of prison and she will still be dead. He needs an injection. And just in case the poor "victim o'society" suffers from ADD, give him three - that way, he'll be sure to notice at least one...

I saw a story about this case on TV years ago, too. A very sad story, indeed.
Hope no one minds this comment, but I had to stop and wonder at this line:
An audio tape expert discovered this week that Kathleen Weinstein flipped the tape over and recorded an additional 22 minutes, Carluccio said. Originally, police thought the tape lasted only 24 minutes.
They needed an "audio tape expert" to discover that?
