WICHITA, Kan. — Brothers Reginald and Jonathan Carr were found guilty Monday of four counts of capital murder for the execution-style killing of four friends two years ago in a snow-covered soccer field.
Reginald Carr, 24, and Jonathan Carr, 22, were convicted for the Dec. 15, 2000, deaths of Aaron Sander, 29; Brad Heyka, 27; Jason Befort, 26; and Heather Muller, 25.
The most notorious of the brothers' crimes involved the events of Dec. 14-15, 2000, when they entered a Wichita home and forced the two women and three men inside to engage in sexual acts with each other and to withdraw money from ATMs.
The women were repeatedly raped before the five friends were taken to the soccer field and shot.
Befort's girlfriend, then a 25-year-old teacher, survived being shot in the head and ran naked through the snow for a mile to get help.
The Carrs were with their attorneys as the verdicts were read. Reginald Carr was in shackles, as he has been throughout much of the trial after reportedly threatening deputies.
The brothers did show any visible reaction when the verdicts were announced.
The Carrs also were convicted of first-degree murder for the Dec. 11, 2000, shooting of Wichita symphony cellist Ann Walenta.
Reginald Carr also was convicted in the Dec. 7, 2000, robbery in which Andrew Schreiber was abducted and forced to withdraw cash from ATMs before his abductors left him unharmed. However, Jonathan Carr was found innocent in the crimes against Schreiber.
Each brother faced the same 47 counts for the nine-day crime spree, with Reginald Carr facing an additional three counts for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Prosecutors told jurors the two armed intruders separated the five friends during their ordeal and they feared that if they attacked one intruder their friend would be harmed.
Lawyers for each of the brothers, meanwhile, sought to blame the other for the crimes. Jonathan Carr's attorney said Jonathan was innocent of some of the crimes and Reginald was the leader in the quadruple murder. Reginald's attorney contended that the most DNA evidence pointed to his brother.
A total of 97 witnesses testified, including five for Reginald Carr, during the nearly two-month trial. More than 850 pieces of evidence were admitted.

Race was not a part of the crime. At least that was the opinion of the prosecutors when they decided on the charges. Now wait until the penalty phase. I would be willing to bet Hillary's ankles that race plays a major factor when the argue against the death penalty.
