That is when I noticed the slow down, too. It started toward the end of the sniper attacks. The site went totally down, for me, for hours. When it came back up, it's been like this since. When down, it stayed like that an entire day and into the evening, until I gave up checking on it. I remember so well, because I had that one free afternoon I could freep until my heart was content. lol. :)I wish there was something we could do to help.

300 baud! How did you manage that? My old tty only does 110.

Jim's last substantive comment on the mystery was yesterday:
We don't know. John has been trying to find the problem, obviously, with no luck so far. The slowdown started late last week. Could be growth has caused us to hit a major knee on the performance curve on one or more of the system components or perhaps it's a coordinated denial of service attack. We don't know yet.

We're getting through, traffic is low at this point, I wonder if there's a proxy that's not doing it's job.

Why do so many people in this countryhate their own country and civilization? It is quite possible to love your country
and hate your government. I think we
all love the Constitution, but what the
federal government in the hands of
both parties has done to the Constitution
is alarming, and should be to all thinking
citizens.

The trouble started right after they busted the two immigrants in the white van . . . things were running hot and heavy on FR . . . Moose had just started another mysterious dialogue with the real sniper . . . I think it was around 11:00 a.m. est . . . when boom, FR was down and out . . . it's been fitful, at best, ever since . . . it just so happened that the same day was the day of some major cyber-attack on the internet "root" or some such thing . . . the timing leads me to speculate that it is an ongoing malicious attack of some kind against FR . . .

There you go again, Focault's Pendulum. Do I have to remind you of our conversation the other day? What do we have to do to keep you from breaking things, dump $10 mil into your credit card account? On second thought, just remove your hands from your keyboard and step back and someone will be right with you.
yarddog said- "I don't know how to post pictures." Focault's Pendulum said- "Just tape them to your screen and press Enter."
Balata said- "LOL! I can only imagine how you broke the internet. ;^)"
Focault's Pendulum- "That only happened because I was jiggling some wires in the back of my comp.
I have since learned my lesson. Now I just whack it with a rolled up newspaper. Hasn't piddled, since."

My DSL connection speed has been consistantly at 548 kbps. (which is decent for the connection tier that I pay for). FR is the only website that I'm having trouble connecting to. I suspect it's a high volume of traffic to FR and possibly bandwidth hogging from some anti-freepers.

On second thought, just remove your hands from your keyboard and step back and someone will be right with you. You have no idea how comforting that would be.

"Malicious attack," could be, as that is about the time all these netbios attacks started on my personal computer. I've read other freepers have noticed the same thing, on theirs. Groan. We need to be busy at this time. This election is so important. If "they" could take down a powerhouse like this one, I don't believe "they" would hesitate. FreeRepublic is very effective and a much needed vehicle, at this particular time.

That's right, only the east coasters (like me) are on their way out. So I guess we can blame DC and NYC Freepers for all the problems!

I'm praying, Letitring. This is my news place every day. Don't know what I would do without Free Republic.
