The Differences Between Conservatives and Liberals

On my Rail Fan Politics board, an internet forum for us rail fans to
discuss political issues, there are all stripes. Conservatives, Centrists, Idio... er, Liberals. It is frankly scary how some folks in this country think. I have established that liberals are very short sighted, and operate from an emotional level only. And one of great envy.

After one round of extended semi debate (conservatives debated, liberals merely ranted on in hatred), I came up with the following concise description of the entire debate.

I knew I hit the nail square on the head as I was met with a firestorm
of liberal ranting, all calling me hateful, bigoted, nonsensical and any other epithets that would obfuscate the real issues. By the reaction, I knew I had a winner. I have submitted this to Savage, Limbaugh, and few of the more local conservative talk show hosts.

This is the full hateful, bigoted, nonsensical piece. Short, concise
and to the point. It all comes down to this:

As I think about it, I realize the essence of the Conservative vs.
Liberal debate.

Conservatives have good stuff.
Liberals want good stuff.

Conservatives have earned their good stuff.
Liberals envy the stuff, but will not expend the effort.

Conservatives rightfully desire to protect the stuff they earned.
Liberals seek to obtain the Conservatives' stuff by declaring it ill
gotten.

Liberals will embark on a mission to get the Conservatives' stuff by
launching the following fallacious attacks:

* Exploited workers
* Raped the environment
* Destroyed indigenous peoples
* injured animals
* cheated on taxes
* stole from the poor
* wasted natural resources
* oppressed minorities
* was greedy
* hated (fill in blank)
* is unconstitutional

The translation of each phrase above is simply "I want your stuff, give it to me."

Ever seen a Conservative envy a Liberal's stuff?

I feel really bad when I am reminded that my black ancestors were enslaved by my white ancestors and I think I should pay reparations to MYSELF????? Do other people realize that people in USA are usually part indian, caucasian, black, asian, hispanic, etc.????? Who among us is 100% anything? I feel bad that my white ancestors mistreated my Cherokee ancestors too! And this was all many many years before my parents were even born! geez Just love Liberal ideas......

You've hit it. The reason that rich liberals are socialists is that they know that socialism keeps anyone from achieving wealth through hard work.
The wealthy don't want anyone "working up to their level".

At the same time, I believe that government has a place in promoting the general welfare. In fact, the Preamble to the Constitution names promoting the general welfare as one of the six enumerated reasons for establishing the Constitution. I also think that the problem is in drawing the line.

Does that make me a conservative or a liberal?

Since you seem to appreciate the difference between promoting the general welfare rather than providing it, I'd certainly say that you're more on the conservative side. :=)

Liberals seem to generally substitute the word 'provide' for 'promote' (or at least they act that way).

Yes, quite some years ago, and now that you mention it, it sounds like I lifted it from Ayn's writing. I wasn't aware of it at the time. I have always considered Ayn's philosophy very credible and important, and have incorporated much of it into my own. I owe her a footnote, consider it done. NP

Another reply could be a phrase I heard a caller say on a local radio show: "Liberals hate consevatives more than they love America, and conservatives love America more than they hate liberals." Makes a lot of sense when you think about it.

It makes you wise when try to understand the exact meaning of the Constitution.

You will note the verb "promote" is used rather than "guarantee" or "insure". I think the choice of words was to prevent the Federal Government from being saddled with an impossible to meet responsibility, and minimize the state intrusion into everyday life. They don't have to make life perfect for everyone, they just should allow individuals to PURSUE happiness without their God given rights being trampled for doing so.
