Free Republic's Technical Problems
Posted on 10/25/2002 2:13:30 PM PDT by per loin
Of late, FR seems plagued with slowdowns. Is this a temporary problem or is some limit being approached?

Here, open a command prompt and type at the C prompt
format c:/
Hit ENTER
That should help speed things up for you.

I think FR has been hacked big time!

As we both work in Houston, I suggest we just step out on the street in front of your building and ask the first one hundred people we see "who do you trust, lawyers or guys who have spent their entire life in the oilfield?" That's not exactly representative, since the "oilfield trash" line up outside my building every morning to bring breakfast goodies to all the lawyers who really run the oil business from inside the building.
Let's just look at who the people elect to run the country.
Lawyers or oilfield dudes, that is the question...

We were getting upto 150 hits/sec this afternoon. We usually get about 30-40. On top of that, the database server has been having a bad day all its own, and I can tell you the extra traffic did not help that situation.
I'm going to look for things I can turn off during the next load spike.

you're gettin' pretty good at this computer stuff, kid ...

Could this be more than a matter of simply buying more bandwidth? Is FR's database server operating at the cutting edge of what can be done with technology - in uncharted territory, so to speak? There's a thinking person's post.
I gave blam the "Cliff's Notes" version. Like I said, I didn't want to geek everyone out. Now, if you all would want me to explain this down to the byte, feel free to ask. I'm sure for most here that I will cure their insomnia if they have it.

As much as I love both of them, neither one could tell the difference between tubulars and drillpipe if their life depended on it.
Bring some kolaches for breakfast on Monday, okay?

Just got back on a few minutes ago.
FYI, I went to Newsmax while this was down (among other places). I got their main page ok, but couldn't get into any of their stories. I suspect this last down time may have been some kind of attack rather than a specific problem with FR.

"We were getting up to 150 hits/sec this afternoon," said John Robinson at post #106.

I going to ignore this thread.
