Beltway's serial killer profiled as gun nut on a power trip
Boston Herald ^ | 23 October 2002 | Dave Wedge

Methodically killing people at will, frustrating authorities, sending mixed messages and threatening to slaughter children are all the tactics of a power-hungry serial killer hellbent on proving his superiority, one expert said yesterday of the Beltway sniper.

``When the police said schools were safe, he wanted to prove they were wrong,'' serial killer profiler John Kelly said. ``It was another way of him showing his superiority to them. So he shot a kid at school.''

Kelly, a clinical social worker and forensic examiner who runs the profiling company, S.T.A.L.K. (System to Apprehend Lethal Killers) Inc., says the maniac mowing people down around the nation's capital is likely a detached gun nut who is obsessed with proving he can do whatever he wants.

Kelly, who has worked with the FBI to profile the Green River Killer in suburban Seattle and the Unabomber, calls this murderer ``a hybrid between Timothy McVeigh, `Son of Sam' (David Berkowitz) and the Zodiac Killer.''

The sniper's threats to kill children are his way of ``upping the stakes,'' Kelly said.

``He's upping the ante,'' Kelly said. ``The riskier the behavior, the more violent and vile - like going after kids - the more excitement he gets out of it. He's injecting more fear into the population. These guys get off creating a lot of fear and feeling like they have control.''

In addition to Kelly, S.T.A.L.K. includes three other clinical psychologists and Detective Frank Adamson of the King County Police Department in Seattle, who headed the Green River probe. The group has released a profile of the Beltway sniper and is working with greater Washington, D.C., authorities on the investigation, Kelly said.

The profile says the sniper is a white male between the ages of 22 and 35, whose hobbies include target shooting and hunting, ``to the point of addiction.'' He also likely enjoys violent shooting games and movies and gun shows.

Kelly also said the killer is now reacting to the police response to the killings and may have been insulted by their handling of his phone message on Monday.

``I think he became highly insulted (Monday), when the police said they got a garbled message and wanted him to call back,'' Kelly said.

``He probably felt like he was being conned in some way to call back and that's why he acted out as quickly as he did (yesterday) morning.

That's not a profile, it's a stereotype.

Hey Kelly you dumb ass, I fit all of those categories outside of 'addiction'. I never shot anyone. And it looks as the 'sniper' isn't white or any of those, so sit the f down and shut the hell up.

Haven't we known this person was dark skinned for two weeks??

Am I way off here but didn't we see a picture that made this guy look sort of Mid-Eastern and then any reference to the picture was pulled because Chief Moose didn't want to hurt any minority group's feeling. Then there was description of a small very thin subject that now seems is the 17 year-old ked Melvo?

Old Moose always watching out for the "feelings".

"Kelly, a clinical social worker "

I'd say liberal because if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck -- then it is a liberal.

What a maroon. Set his sights high, though. He's not wasting his time on any non-lethal killers.

Bad enough they were eager to pin it on on a white male redneck, but after the fact, they go out of their way to not call attention to the race or religion of the suspects. Moose was the first one to say the word "black", it was as if the word would bring the world to an end.

Here on FR we have several apologists that all want to "just get along". What a sorry lot.

Well he was addicted to target shooting! And that was such a tough thing to guess!

Lethal killers. Ah, yes. As opposed to the non-lethal killers.

I hereby announce the formation of the Stupid Liberal Acronym Prevention And Solution Society

You mean people like this can actually get paid for stating the obvious? Six year old kids could be making a fortune!

Kelly, a clinical social worker...

These people are a scourge, a by-product of a society that believes only authorities know what's best for the public, that believes we should always err on the side of people not being responsible for themselves.

"only authorities know what's best for the public"

I would say that Chief Moose is the living proof of how bad things have gotten. Almost incapable of conveying even simple ideas and everything he said was oh, so, PC. That so little information was released to the public proves your point.

"He probably felt like he was being conned in some way"

This is so dangerous that the police have hurt the poor guy’s feelings. Imagine that the police hurt your feelings – I mean you could sue for millions of dollars – and win.

It is all about feelings, this is sick.

I just red this about his hurt feelings:

Sources told WUSA the suspect was very frustrated after he had been "put off, hung up on, not believed" when he tried to tell Rockville City police that he was the sniper. Sources say this frustration led him to contact a clergyman in Spotsylvania County, Va., and that clergyman was able to tell police details only the sniper would know.
