POUGHKEEPSIE - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, in town on Tuesday to campaign for Rep. Maurice Hinchey, promised to help human services agencies secure federal funding and criticized the economic policies of the Bush administration.
Clinton and Hinchey attended two events together: a fund-raiser for the five-term Democratic congressman and a forum at the Family Partnership Center, a one-stop-shopping health and human services center.
The visit to the Family Partnership Center was designed to give Hinchey and Clinton insight into the work of some of the roughly 30 agencies that call the North Hamilton Street facility home. While there, they heard pleas from for federal funding to keep the agencies afloat.
Hinchey and Clinton promised to work to keep federal money flowing to the agencies, but they warned that problems could loom, and they pointed the finger at the White House.
The two criticized the Bush administration for failing to have in place an economic plan that meets the needs of its citizens and that allows the neediest people to slip further into despair.
"What kind of country is it that turns its backs on people ... yet can give the biggest tax cut in the history of the world to millionaires?" said Hinchey, D-Hurley.
"There is no economic plan at the national level. ... We don't have the surplus of 18 months ago," Clinton said. "All the things I view as investments are being cut back or cut out completely."
Clinton, D-N.Y., also criticized the Bush administration for failing to extend unemployment benefits, something, she said, that no other president has refused to do during recessionary times. And she accused the administration of only paying lip service to the needs of families and to family values.
The Democratic senator and former first lady urged the roughly 200 people attending the Family Partnership Center forum to support Hinchey's re-election bid, saying his place on the House Appropriations Committee makes his election imperative.
"Clearly, I hope with all my heart that Maurice represents this community when this election is over," she said. "We cannot afford to lose a member of the Appropriations Committee."
Hinchey is being challenged in the Nov. 5 election by Republican Eric Hall of Binghamton. The city of Poughkeepsie is new to the congressional district. It was added earlier this year when district lines across New York state were altered.
In comments to the press following the forum, Hinchey said the Bush administration has a record of remarkable negative achievement after less than two years in office.
He chastised the decision to reduce funding to the Securities and Exchange Commission and said President Bush is responsible for renewed problems with North Korea.
"When (former President) Bill Clinton left office, we were on the verge of solving the problem of North Korea," Hinchey said. But now, he said, Bush branding North Korea part of an "axis of evil" prompted the country to renew its nuclear program.
Prior to visiting the Family Partnership Center, Clinton attended a fund-raising luncheon for Hinchey at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel.
There, she was greeted by protesters who were angry that she supported giving President Bush authority to unilaterally wage war against Iraq.
Clinton defended her vote, saying it was made as a way to "get the (United Nations) to understand the seriousness" of the need for weapons inspectors in Iraq.
Hinchey voted against the resolution, which passed both houses of Congress easily.
Hinchey is running for re-election in the 22nd Congressional District, a reconfiguration of the former 26th District. The newly created district includes the city of Poughkeepsie, all of Ulster and Sullivan counties and parts of Orange, Delaware, Broome, Tioga and Tompkins counties.
Wrong! The North Korean leadership is responsible The Clintoncrats want to give North Kroea a status of legitimacy for some stupid revolutionary reason. . We must always seek the colapse of that government.
We were not, you clymer (Hinchey, not mondonico). The sinkmaster made a few empty public gestures (photo-ops) and did his usual cower and wimp-out.
A great deal of our international problems -- like 9/11/01 -- are the result of his cowardice coming home to roost.
He has no balls and a HUGE ego, a very lethal (for us) combination. He just wanted to con the masses into believing that he could easily handle everything and that we never had real reason to worry and fear those who would kill us. I hate him.
Anyone with half a brain cell (regardless of their political leanings) knows all The Rapist did during his 8 years was pardon terrorists and felons, take credit for things he had nothing to do with, raise DNC cash, and stain sinks.
He spent years scrounging for a legacy, only to have it occur after he left office. On 9/11/01. to be precise.
Instead of being a leader and going after those who are killing us, he took the politically expedient route and lied to us.
As I've long said, he's nothing more than an inconsequential boob who conned a significant portion of the population into believing that his incessant public navel gazings were actually profound.
He never stopped telling us just how hard he was working.
COMMISSION TO ASSESS THE BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT TO THE UNITED STATES
See Section II 4.a "North Korea"
"Ahv never Never NEVER worked suh hard in all mah lahff!! (banging fist on podium)
That's what The Rapist said in a press conference in 1996 when Bubba shut the government down..........and started his sleazy little cigar party with Monica.
With statements like this made publicly, how can any rational human vote for this guy? In what universe does he live his daily life? What a Liar, and another Liberal Loser!!! They're certainly ( both Hinchey and The HildeBeast ) effective Mis-Leaders , there's no denying that as a fact.
