Maryland governor orders no outdoor shooting?

Posted on 10/16/2002 10:15:30 PM PDT by SevenDaysInMay

Maryland governor signs executive order which outlaws in four counties the shooting of guns out of doors. Hunters are reported as frustrated.

I heard this twice on national radio news 16 October. Sounds weirdly martial lawish.

Upon what authority does any governor have the legal authority to make law himself? Is this a pre-election grandstand to those potential voters who are too afraid to care whether such a police power is legal.

We need to get ready for interesting times, friends.

It might have to do with the equipment the military has provided to track the sniper. The order would remove a lot of false readings.

Of course, politicians always like to look like they are doing something, even though they cannot do anything useful under most circumstances.

It's because the police are being swamped by false alarm calls from people who hear any sort of gunfire at all; the entire region is on edge, and these calls are diverting resources away from the actual investigation and creating all sorts of waste. It's a very temporary order.

Oh.

I thought maybe they figured if they made it against the law to shoot outdoors, the sniper would have to stop.

Loose lips allow shooters to slip.

I'm pro gun rights, but if this helps them spot this idiot, I'm all for it. I believe it's a temporary enactment. If it wasn't I'd be against it.

I guess it's still alright to shoot inside the house.

outdoor shooting ranges are exempt and doing fine. Only applies to firearms hunting in the counties.

This was handled with the typical tin ear of Glenspending. "The executives of the four counties asked him to do this", is how it is being reported today. I can understand people leaving their towns to shop and get gas in more remote areas of those counties just trying to be away from the threat. Then they freak out hearing "normal" rural rifle sighting in and hunting of October. And waste the LEO resources...

please ignore previous post, It was put on this thread by accident.

My question on this thread:

Is the state of Maryland going to compensate the owners of the hunting preserves for the lost revenue?

If Mr.Glendenning has forbidden outdoor shooting,perhaps Maryland's gun-owners should consider some"Indoor"shooting?

It's because the police are being swamped by false alarm

It's because Gov. Spendenning is a bedwetting liberal, and hates guns. Note that Virginia Gov Wahnuh (who is also a liberal, but not a bedwetting hoplophobe) hasn't issued any such order.

It's a very temporary order.

I've got this nice drawbridge over the Potomace for sale. You wanna but it?

Watch the temporary ban be extended and then authorized for other incidents, etc etc. IMHO>

I doubt they'll try that. But if they do, we should go after them through the courts and the ballot box. We have a Constitution. It's there for a reason. And we should end the career of anyone who thinks otherwise.

I have a right to defend myself and my family. Nobody has a right to infringe on that right. And being unable to remain proficient with my weapons is a real infringement on that right.

You believe, but don't know. It's "temporary" but nothing says how long "temporary" lasts. Sloppy citizenship.
