I don't think the Administration relishes the idea of having to tamp down an internal "civil war" (against muslims) while conducting two offensive wars (Al Qaeda and Iraq). It is a distraction they wish to avoid for as long as possible -- or at least until they can develop a plan (a political saleable plan, in all senses) for dealing with what might be a rather stark and potentially violent internal reaction to this.

This is fascinating. I was just in Seattle buying special outdoor comfy foot-friendly shoes from a definite Seattle lib type and he said he'd heard terrorists might be behind shootings....then, I swear, he said, "Well, if this is terrorism, that changes everything. They cannot get away with that here!" With a tiny nudge he made even stronger statements about immigrants behaving badly.
I think many people, including the libbiest libs are going to want much more homeland security in their own 'hoods if this shooter turns out to be an olive-skinned guy from ME or Latin America. It's too personally scary for the lefties to stay far out on the left fringe, undefended and vulnerable. So we may well see a real swing toward center of the great unwashed, all to the good.
WHEREAS if it is a white male they will just go ahead and confiscate all the guns of law-abiding Americans. Not a harmful reaction to the gun=grabbers! i can bet the gun-grabbers are rooting for it being a 'domestic terrorist'. no, i dont have to bet, the antigun ads are out, and capitol hill is already restless.
