I finished Haney's book about two weeks ago (good read). Glad to see some pro's finally getting their opinions in over the media backwash.

How did this bit of sanity seep through? I'm an out-of-shape, middle-aged civilian, and I could have shot as well as this/these Beltway stain(s) with my late, lamented Mini-14 and iron sights. Sniper? Hell, I wouldn't even be up to the level of Clifford Shore's description of mere "stout-hearted, well-trained riflemen."

Gad, the clueless must now consider every pot-bellied, once-a-year, deer stand devotee a sniper, which means that the timber must have been virtually infested with "snipers" last weekend. I guess if it advances - or might advance - the confiscation agenda, then the degradation of terms is just fine.

Haney described feeling ``soiled and guilty'' after making a 350-yard head shot during a 1983 mission to support Marines in Beirut

Yikes.... nice varmint hunt.. 350 yrd head shot. It's nice to have men like this on our side.

Well, all's fair in war, but I'm sure the North Vietnamese regulars and the Viet Cong had a different opinion of the US snipers. In fact, during WWII, US soldiers occasionally executed German snipers when they caught them.

The Washington killer has been using a .223 caliber projectile, which some have called a standard sniper bullet. But Mawhinney, who lives in Baker City, Ore., said a professional sniper would use a heavier load, at least a .30 caliber.

Absolutely ... and a professional shooter would also be more likely prefer to use a bolt action piece such as a Model 70 or an '03, for instance, because they're so much more accurate than using a semi-automatic rifle such as the M15, or even an M-1.

"...because snipers don't take innocent life"

Someone forgot to tell that to Lon Horiuchi.

DG,glad you posted this.

I hadn't seen anything involved in these murders that any number of people couldn't pull off.

Many American teens or reasonably short term shooters have the ability to make these shots, even if we discover in the end that it is a "pro".

In my experience over the years, true hunters, teens included, are not the types that kill for "thrill or fun".

The nuts that kill for no reason are often the wannabe hunter or military types. They're the same kinds that are thrilled by inflicting pain on animals or humans for no reason.

I still wouldn't rule out an individual or group trying to harm our Nation for whatever "cause" they support by any means and in my own mind think that's most likely at this time.

I think we're witnessing the lone angry person, and have thought so from the start. I'd be shocked if this is a pro.

He's a decent shot, but they are not hard shots to make. Where he is clever is making sure that he's not noticeable before the shot is fired.

Hard to say who or what kind of critter would conduct such an atrocity on innocent folks......... We have read a gazillion possibilities here on FR. Some from viable sources and alot that are bizare yet IMHO nothing is too bizare to not check, consider or investigate. This killer has to be caught fast .....

Stay Safe !

"Someone forgot to tell that to Lon Horiuchi.

That puke was an FBI shooter...a killer of unarmed and unthreating mother holding a baby.
And Diane FineSwine - Senator of California - defended him.

At the core, it's still the Corps

Encouraging to see the caliber of folks the Corps is still able to attract and retain.

He might be a homegrown nutcase but even one of our own nuts could take up the Islamic "cause" on his own.I,m thinking about the kid that crashed the plane in Florida and the guy with the shotgun that jammed or he most likely shortshucked in one of the Southern airports.

If a terrorist was cut off from his support group, these shootings would be cheap to carry out and could be easily planned and carried out by one or two.

I've been expecting sniper shootings for some time by the terrorists instead of the constant suicide acts. They must be able to count and see that they need everyone of them to carry out more than one attack,or they'll shortly run out of pawns.

That said, yes,we have plenty of just plain crazies that could be doing this.

I am expecting it to be home grown. I keep thinking of McVeigh and his mideast contacts. This could be something similar. An aryan nation type, fantacizing about being Al Qaeda.

It could be a simple nutball, but if its two people working together, that suggests a particular kind of nutball.

The media acts like that is so strange, but Nichols and McVeigh worked together. So did Bonnie and Clyde. It's not unheard of.
