AQ has been active again for the last 10 days and I go back and forth whether the sniper is AQ or domestic militia.

I do NOT believe it is "domestic militia" unless they're being backed by the AQ (as in the Oklahoma Bombing).

It could be deliverymen, repairmen/handymen, plumbers/electricians, cable/phone installers--any occupation that gives that kind of mobility, and who could blend into the background.

The best "analysis" that I've seen on this was by Beau Ditl (frequent guest on Imus) -- former NYC cop and now famous private detective.

Beau's theory is: the 4 murders a week-ago Thursday were done in such a compact time (about 2 hours span), he figures it has to be two people working together with the same rifle. He figures a couple of "loser" young males (early 20's?) who are egging each other on, and perhaps devotees (sp?) of "sniper video games" (he referred to one his son "plays" that, at the end of the game, declares "I am God!").

I hope the police/FBI are considering this theory -- and perhaps tying it to the shooting at the Bowie, MD middle school -- I wouldn't be surprised if there are a pair of psychopaths at Beau theorizes, that they went to that school years ago and picked up their "loser status" there. Just some thoughts on a terrible situation.

I don't think this is foreign terrorism. Its too much in one spot. I think this is a homegrown nut playing on the idea that we are frightened of terrorism. Three of the shootings were in areas with roads that go towards Spotsylvania. I wouldn't be surprised if this person lives in Spotsylvfania or real close and has a family (which could explain not shooting on the weekends.) He uses his company truck for the shootings while he is out on the road and easily escapes back to his job.

It is a training guide for muslims living in other countries so that they can be prepared for the jihad. It explains and provides verses from the koran that jihad is not an option for muslims, it is an obligation.

It provide directions for the reader to join the local shooting club so that he can have as much experience with firearms as possible.

It also directs him to join the local health club for strength and endurance training. The reader is encouraged to attend in the off hours, as the clubs are frequently attended by inappropiatly clothed women and men.

"And prepare against them all you can of power, including steeds of war to terrorise the enemies of Allah and others besides whom you may not know, but Allah does know. And whatever you shall spend in the Cause of Allah shall be repaid unto you, and you shall not be treated unjustly." [Quran 8:60]

In commenting on this verse, the Messenger (SAWS) said: "Indeed, power is shooting, power is shooting, power is shooting." [Sahih Muslim]

Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA) that the Messenger (SAWS) said: "If anyone keeps a horse for Jihad in the Way of Allah, motivated by his faith in Allah and his belief in His Promise, then he will be rewarded on the Day of Resurrection for what the horse has eaten or drunk and for its dung and urine." [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

After receiving a number of e-mails asking about this topic, we decided to include a small article about this subject. It is broken down into sections, but should be read from beginning to end for maximum benefit.

1.0 What is Jihad?

Jihad literally means ‘to struggle’. In the military sense it is meant in the context, ‘to struggle against oppression’. Jihad is therefore an act to liberate people from the oppression of tyrants. Jihad is not illegal acts of terror against innocent people. When tabloid journalism mistakenly informs the masses that Jihad is ‘to commit illegal acts of terror’, they are revealing the lack of their research and the extent of their unprofessional approach to the subject.

2.0 Military Training is an Islamic Obligation not an Option

According to the verse above ("And prepare against them all you can of power..."), military training is an obligation in Islam upon every sane, male, mature Muslim, whether rich or poor, whether studying or working and whether living in a Muslim or non-Muslim country. The Prophet (SAWS) explained the meaning of the term 'power' in the above verse during a Friday Sermon by mentioning that power was specifically shooting.

The verse mentions 'what you can...', meaning that the Muslims must prepare to the utmost of their ability and circumstances.

'Steeds of war' refer to the horses that were prepared for battle. In this day and age, the scholars of Islam have explained this term to mean all forms of modern weaponry such as infantry weapons, tanks, artillery, aircraft, etc.

The above verse is a clear evidence that military training of all sorts is an Islamic obligation, not something optional. Furthermore, the obligation is according to one's ability, in that the Muslims must use every means at their disposal to undertake military and physical training for Jihad.

In Surah Taubah of the Quran, Allah answers those hypocrites who made feeble excuses to the Messenger of Allah (SAWS) so that they would not have to participate in the Battle of Tabuk. The hypocrites came to the Prophet (SAWS) and gave their excuses with the impression that they really wanted to take part in the battle, but difficult circumstances outside their control were preventing them from doing so. Allah's response was:

"And if they had really intended to march forth, certainly they would have made some preparation for it; but Allah hated them being sent forth, so He made them lag behind, and it was said to them, 'Sit you among those who sit at home (women, children, elderly, etc.)'" [Quran 9:46]

These hypocrites had not intended to participate in Jihad from the outset and their lack of preparations was the evidence for this. Had they really wanted to take part in the Jihad, they would have prepared themselves and tried their utmost to join the battle, like the three companions who approached the Messenger (SAWS) before the Battle of Tabuk, requesting horses or mules so they could join the Battle. When the Prophet (SAWS) informed them that he could not provide them with mounts, they turned back with their eyes full of tears that they could not join the battle:

"Nor is there blame on those who came to you to be provided with mounts, when you said, 'I can find no mounts for you,' they turned back, while their eyes were overflowing with tears of grief that they could not find anything to spend for Jihad." [Quran 9:92]

Therefore, those Muslims unable to participate in Jihad at this present time whatever the reason have no excuse before Allah for not training for Jihad.

The Messenger of Allah (SAWS) said: "Whoever dies without having fought in battle, nor having the sincere wish in his heart to fight in battle, dies on a branch of hypocrisy." [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

The one sincere to fight in battle is the one who makes suitable preparations for battle. A Muslim that spends a life empty of any physical or military training for Jihad, let alone Jihad itself, should fear dying on a branch of hypocrisy according to the above hadith. True Iman (faith) is manifested in actions and if someone truly wishes to fight Jihad, he will prepare himself in all possible ways.

Yes, they are easy and cheap to get. Also, on FR saw a few posts about an auction at which several Arabs bought many vehicles. Maybe it's harder to trace cars/trucks bought at auction. I'd be surprised if shooter(s) didn't change vehicles or paint truck after release of this graphic.

My neighbor and I went to a government auction in Springfield VA a couple years ago. It's a racket. Swarthy guys (our thought then was mafia) were bidding big bucks on junk heaps. We decided they were bidding for VIN numbers (NOT cars) to attach to stolen vehicles. The auctions are held on a regular basis. Curious to know if anyone else has ever gone to one of these and what your impressions are?

Bah, in any case this Pat Brown is terrible. She is being honest and accurate when she says that white men are unfairly categorized as being the only ones capable of serial killing. However, she made the statement that this guy is targetting minorities when they are available, but then takes whatever is there, if they are not.

That seems like a bit of a stupid idea. So when the pattern doesn't exist, we simply attribute it to him taking targets of opportunity, but when he does hit a "minority" it's part of a pattern. WHAT?!?! Talk about selecting and ignoring evidence.

The greater DC Metro area is VERY racially mixed. I don't see him as selecting minorities at all. If he wanted to kill all non-white, he(and his accomplice) would have no problem doing so.

This is all way too much speculation on way too little data, but while we're all enjoying ourselves why not consider that one of the sniper's criteria is having a white truck - any white truck - in the vicinity when he chooses a victim?

One weird theory I have is that the shooter and his driver (if the white box truck info is true) are dressed in uniforms, like electric company repairmen or something, and carrying the gun around in a very large, oblong toolbox.

A AR-15 carbine is 35.5" long, it will fit diagnally in a box 24"x30" or even a box 26" square. Not too large, not too oblong. With a folding stock that could be knocked down even more. (sq of rifle lenth = sum of squares of other 2 sides)

If he's using a Thomson Contender type pistol, we're looking at an even smaller box.

I am sorry I can not get a link up. This site also talks about Al-Queda and sending a message to France and Germany and if they don't listen they will step up their attacks.

Quite the read, I see. The shooting, shooting, etc. is in line with the videos captured in Afghanistan which showed the terrorists training to kill occupants of a car, kill golfers (of all the unlikely things), and other unlikely scenarious. Not all sleeper cells are in a position, through training or funding, to carry out large operations, and so are encouraged to carry out small operations. This according to Steven Emerson's book American Jihad. Thanks for posting, Brad.

I don't think this guy is targeting minorities only. I think he targets people who are the best targets. People who happen to be standing out in the open. Parking lots and gas stations are good places to look for people just standing in one place.
