"An amateur who doesn't know how to compensate his point of aim for the glass will very likely blow the shot unless he gets lucky"

Maybe his target was outside the store and the (lucky) target moved.

Now that's a heck of a point - it would make more sense, and fit within the pattern overall...

Man, if this guy hits again today, there is going to be widespread panic if not already.....

I live within the crescent of the shootings. My daughter’s school was in lock down today. I take my daughter to school and wonder if I’ll be picking her up alive. More than panic is the feeling of RAGE. If law enforcement can’t handle this, it’s time for citizens to get involved -- as in militia. I’ve talked to neighbors, co-workers and friends and we’re ready to donate money towards our defense. Problem is … we’re a white color crowd and hire people to mow our lawns – we don’t like getting “dirty.” We stay PC to get promoted at our government (or government related) jobs. We’ve taken all the touchy feely briefings at our job so we’re afraid to say “boo” because we might offend somebody. We’re so busy chasing the “dream” we’re in dreamland. Just wondering how many of us will choose denial rather than wake up to the nightmare… It’s hitting home now…

For you people outside the DC area: If this were to be happening in your town, what would be the reaction?

Even one murder of a child in our neighborhood sent the neighborhood into a state of shock for months. Lots of us had symptoms of post-traumatic stress syndrome. These shootings are going to have the same or greater psychological effects. With a killer running around out there, the stress and fear are unimaginable.

Kudos to the brave men who stood guard outside the school.

As Charles DeGaulle did in "Day of the Jackal...."

I've got a little theory about this guy's timing..

He's popping people mostly during morning and evening hours. Could he be choosing "rush hour" times because that's when the police are most likely tied up with other stuff? (Accidents, fender benders, speeders, etc)

Police tied up = clean and unrushed getaway.

Just a crazy thought. :)

Oh trust me I would run....unfortunately I had 3kids under 5 in tow....the best I could do was hip 2 of them and make my 5 yr old hang on to my shirt as we walked as fast as we could. The look on his face as my normal " get in the car" turned into " GET INTO THE CAR RIGHT NOW-NOW!!!!"....horrid.

Anybody think the President will mention any of this tonight during his national speech (which is to be on Iraq), too?

"The ATF guy said the school shooting was linked to shootings in Montgomery County, DC and Fredericksburg. That would discount a copycat, unless the ATF guy is misleading us"

Oh...thanks for that...so, if not a copycat, and if the pattern in meant to be the crescent moon god symbol of the Islmakazis, then why's 7 so far away from the others? This is mainly a rhetorical question, but the position of 7 in relation to the other attacks does seem important.

If this were to be happening in your town, what would be the reaction?

1. Probably concealed carry permits would increase substantially (it's not very difficult to do here), and more people would carry something, regardless. (I don't know if my wife would or not -- probably not).

2. Increased police coverage

3. Lotsa kids staying home.

I admit I have knee-jerk reactions when it comes to my kids, but there is no way I would send my kids to school tomorrow. I have been known to run to two different schools to grab my kids when there is a tornado warning! I don't care, I feel much better when my kids are home with me.

When you walk, make sure you don't walk in a straight line. Zig zag. Don't park in an exposed place in a parking lot. He seems to be shooting people who are alone, so move in a group, if you can. Always be aware of your surroundings.

I'm sure others can think up more ways to keep you safe. Because he (or they) are sniping & hidden, you probably won't see him.

'Maybe his target was outside the store and the (lucky) target moved.'

That would be my bet, too.
Also, doesn't it seem he is now making a point of playing to our fears?
The first day the news made a big deal about locking down the kids at school and the safety of the kids. First thing Monday morning, he targets a child going to school. He's playing with everyone here. He's trying to show us he is our worse nightmare.

Here is the restricted map:

I don't know where that is in relation to the shootings though.

Here is the NOTAM:

2/0291 (#2) MD.. FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS HAGERSTOWN/THURMONT, MD. OCTOBER 1-31, 2002 LOCAL. PURSUANT TO TITLE 14, SECTION 91.141 OF THE CODE OF FEDERAL REGULATIONS, AIRCRAFT FLIGHT OPERATIONS ARE PROHIBITED WITHIN THE FOLLOWING AREA UNLESS OTHERWISE AUTHORIZED BY ATC. NOTE: MILITARY AIRCRAFT PARTICIPATING IN THE P-40 FIGHTER CAP AND WASHINGTON DULLES (IAD) ARRIVALS ON OR SOUTH OF THE MRB 065R ARE EXEMPT FROM THIS RESTRICTION. 5.0 NMR AT OR BLW 12500 FEET MSL OF 393853N/0772800W OR THE FDK351014.8 FROM 0210010400 UTC (0000 LOCAL 10/01/02) UNTIL 0211010459 UTC (2359 LOCAL 10/31/02). HAGERSTOWN/THURMONT MARYLAND. WIE UNTIL UFN [See graphic.] [Plain-language guidance: Temporary Flight Restrictions are in place prohibiting flights for a 5 NM radius at and below 12,500 ft MSL from the center point of the charted P-40 prohibited area. Those were my thoughts about that. I think the kid today made an unexpected move too, that probably saved his life. That and the quick actions of his Guardian.

I'm sure he'll mention it briefly at the beginning of his remarks, then go into the speech on Iraq.

... and if the pattern in meant to be the crescent moon god symbol of the Islmakazis ...

That presupposes that the salamikazis would make a pattern. A good joke, maybe, but it doesn't sound like good operational discipline. Sounds more like a nutjob.

Now, an Islamic nutjob might do such a thing.....

From what I've read from the sentence that Fellow Traveler wrote about the "bite", I'm positive that he was writing about the recoil.
