Just broke on Fox - Ashcroft questioning NJSC Rule
Fox News Television | 10/03/02 | Brytani

Fox news just reported, Ashcroft is asking NJ officials to explain why they are not following federal election laws in regards to military ballots in the switch and bait ruling.

This might get interesting

Right, and we should have an Attorney General who just ignores federal law if it will help democrats?

We had that for 8 years! I'm delighted to see an AG who won't obfuscate, delay and look the other way.

How can this affect the NJSC's ruling,...

It is a good way of forcing SCOTUS to get involved. They were otherwise poised to sit this one out.

"You are exactly right. Not a shrewd move."

Why? Because liberals don't like Ashcroft? That's enough of a reason for them, but I don't think it's enough of a reason for us.

Ashcroft will be demonized as "partisan."

So what! He isn't running for anything.

Once people found out military ballots were effected and that absentee ballots had already been sent out AND returned, this turned into a federal issue.

I hope Ashcroft slams them hard for trying to screw the military again!!! The GOP does not do itself a favor by not standing up for our troops, that's the dems job.

Enter stage right, the much needed villian, John Ashcroft. He's not Newt Gingrich but he may do in a pinch.

Forgive me, but this is the attitude that gets the stupid party (Republican) in trouble all the time.

The Democrats dont care if their President gets blow jobs in the oval office, all they care about is winning.

The Liberals count on Republicans to worry about someone saying bad things about them, so they run for cover instead of doing the people's business.

I happen to be a Libertarian in almost total disagreement with John Ashcroft's beliefs, but I RESPECT him as a man of courage and convictions. Republicans would do better standing behind their man, than going along with the Liberal demonization of the man, if they ever expect to win anything against a Democratic party that has no limits on what they will do to win.

Here we are again, Republicans fighting a defensive action on what the law actually says, while the Democrats in media and the courts argue that it's the 'people's will.'

But without Rule of Law, the People's Will becomes the Despot's Whim.

Yep, the Dems have spent the last two years portraying him as the antichrist and now is the time for them to cash in. We had a good election going with the nation wondering about the Dems trustworthiness, patriotism, and common sense. Now we will have weeks of media focus on Ashcroft vs. The Voters Right to Choose with a nice dollop of Ashcroft "using the justice dept. to interfere in another free and fair election".

Great.

Yes, but Ashcroft needs to be real careful here. The media will pick this up as Bush Adm interfering with state politics and "playing party politics".

So What? If (in our dreams) Ashcroft could reverse the SCONJ decision then the media can yell and scream forever and it won't make any difference.

You just will not get off this, will you?

Nope. Can't.

Still obsessing with Clinton while some of us are trying to forget him.

I don't see Clinton's name anywhere in my comments. He'll never be brought to justice, nor will Hillary.....but why not some of the others?

I just can't turn my back on justice. And I'm not sorry.

Regards ;^)

Not a shrewd move.

I disagree. The more this gets stirred up more more it enrgizes our conservative base and creates Reagan Democrats. I already predict that many who would publicaly be known as Dems will quietly vote Republican this year. Exactly like 1994.

Your attitude is exactly what the liberals depend on. Screw the Media. The law is the LAW. Ashcroft's job is to defend it.

Not to make excuses for him but facts are facts, going after terrorist cells in this country really is more important.

Okay, but he still finds time to block the will of the people of Oregon as expressed in referendum.. I doubt that many terrorists voted in those referenda.

The Liberals count on Republicans to worry about someone saying bad things about them, so they run for cover instead of doing the people's business.

The difference is that we were doing remarkably well making the Democrats self-destruct with the issues that we were focusing on since Labor Day. The Republican strategists have kept the Democrats completely divided and at each others throats for two months now. Masterful job for a midterm election even with a good economy. Masterful.

Let me tell you the ONE thing that the Democrats can UNITE on is an attack campaign against John Ashcroft. If you think thats a better strategy to switch to then we are in some trouble already.

Yeah, but barring a constitutional amendment, and being able to send it back in time, Lousenberg is on the ballot...

Ashcroft is a very sincere, professional, personally religious man

That is the image he likes to present, no argument about that.

I would much prefer to continue with a winning campaign strategy than win a rhetorical victory and unite the Democratic party in a "that devil Ashcroft" campaign. Thats ground they would love to give battle on.

I don't see where Ashcroft has a choice. The NJSC went on national TV with a scheme that could disenfranchise military votes. They themselves knew they would invite federal scrutiny.

If all you're worried about is that Senate seat then you're not that much different than the Dems. We must uphold the rule of law or we'll never win another majority or the presidency again. We can't win if we allow the Dems these massive advantages.
