Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador erupts
QUITO (AFP) Oct 03, 2002 The Tungurahua volcano, in the center of Ecuador, which has been erupting for almost a year, had a spectacular explosion of gases, ash and water Wednesday, according to geophysicists here.
The explosion, one of Tungurahua's largest, took place at 8:29 a.m.and reached a height of seven kilometers (4.3 miles), according to Alexandra Alvarado, of the Geophysical Institute at the Quito National Polytechnic School.
Alvarado added that the cloud of ash, which could be seen from Quito some 135 kilometers (84 miles) away, was drifting and was last reported raining volcanic dust on Ambato, 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) northwest of Tungurahua.
The 5,023-meter-high (16,480-foot-high) volcano last erupted October 22, 2000, after rumbling for one full year.
The nearby town of Banos, with 15,000 residents, was evacuated at that time.

I guess my first question would be....are we gonna die ?Yes. But this volcanic eruption probably won't be involved.

I believe 'banos' is Spanish for bath.
Makes me wonder if any of them were in the shower when it happened! ;)

The eruption was caused by US policies in South America....

Anybody know how much sh!t gets spewed into the air (atmosphere) by one of these bad boys? I mean, I know it's a lot- I was hoping a Freeper might have some figures, charts, graphs. Is it more than what we've put into the air in a year? A decade? What exactly?

Is it more than what we've put into the air in a year? A decade? What exactly? This question gets asked a lot on FR, and since I have interests in both volcanoes and climate, I end up answering it a lot. Here's the page that I keep quoting:
Gases: Man vs. the Volcanoes
To summarize: volcanoes are an important source of sulfur (particularly sulfur dioxide) to the atmosphere, and an insignificant source of CO2 to the atmosphere.

If you were trying to cheer me up....it didn't exactly work.

I knew Ecuador shouldn't have adopted the US Dollar as their national currency! If they had adopted the EURO the volcano would still be co-existing with humans in peace....

interesting ..... so when's the next really big earthquake ? That's about the only news story that's missing this week.According to another thread here on FR, we just had a 6.3 in the Sea of Cortez. That big enough? How many more Biblical plagues are left? (Locusts, boils, darkness...)
