Anybody know how much sh!t gets spewed into the air (atmosphere) by one of these bad boys? I mean, I know it's a lot- I was hoping a Freeper might have some figures, charts, graphs. Is it more than what we've put into the air in a year? A decade? What exactly?

This question gets asked a lot on FR, and since I have interests in both volcanoes and climate, I end up answering it a lot. Here's the page that I keep quoting:

Gases: Man vs. the Volcanoes

To summarize: volcanoes are an important source of sulfur (particularly sulfur dioxide) to the atmosphere, and an insignificant source of CO2 to the atmosphere.
