What has happened to U.S.?
Me | 10/2/2002 | Me

What has happened to our image as a beacon of freedom, opportunity and the right way to live?

Much of the world fears or hates us. We have a proclaimed policy of attacking any country whose policies or regimes don't follow our dictates.

Why have we become the biggest bully in the world?

Bucking for the "Neville Chamberlain Peace Prize", are we?

No, just asking a question that contains it's own answer. It seemed to be in vogue.

I'd bet your one good eye that you went to public school and learned your great knowledge of American history from those wonderful fair and balanced teachers!!

I did go to public school, but I learned from my own reading.

Give me a break.

I'm not in the habit of "giving" things. It must be earned. You've failed in that respect because you still have left too many questions on the table.

I am merely trying to give the sheep another direction to consider.

And apparently you think of yourself as the shepherd. There's that ideology again! Anyone who doesn't agree with you is a "sheep."

And you want me to give you a break? Yeah, sure...

I think it is due to an imperial policy.

You need to bone up on world history since the end of WWII and connect the dots. Each step along the way has led us to our present predicament. The charge of "imperialism" indicates both a misunderstanding of the term and a misunderstanding of history.

On balance, since the world leadership role had to fall to some nation, it is extremely fortunate for the six billion people on this planet that it fell to us. That doesn't mean, however, that we have any interest in searching out enemies and picking fights.

The present belligerencies have been ripening for roughly 25 years, or since Sadat shook Begin's hand in Jimmy Carter's Rose Garden. On 911, the damn burst and we have now been forced to settle accounts once and for all in the Arab world. If we do a half-assed job, we'll pay for it later. It's time to force a paradigm shift in that part of the world, or else watch a nuclear cloud rise over an American city five or ten years down the road.

"It takes but one to make a war, not two, and those who do not have swords may still die upon them." -- Eowyn, Lord of the Rings

War was made upon us. We did not seek it. Fortunately for us, we have the biggest swords on the planet. Now is the time to use them.

What are you doing here on FreeRepublic?

I'll answer that for them. They are here to disrupt and use bandwidth so they can go back to DU and smirk.

Thanks for saying it that way. I tend to get worked up and combative (just what the poster was looking for, I know), but I agree with your outlook on US power.

Mad Dawgg didn't call anybody any names. He just told UnBlinkingEye not to let the door hit him in his ass on his way out of the country.

What were your thoughts on Slobodan?

He,who is standing before a kangaroo court?

I think Clinton, Albright, Cohen, Sheas, Blair et al. should be standing before that cruel joke of a court.

Unblinking....

That was your post, logged as the 100th.

If that is not name calling, I apoligize. IMHO certainly not dripping with intellectual embodiment.

We are still a great nation and a beacon of freedom and opportunity. I think and hope our relations with our allies will survive present difficulties if we all keep our heads. It is likely, though, that our central position in the world of today may come back to haunt us. That so many who want a better life come here to improve their lot may cause us many problems in the future. It has already begun to do so. Surely it would be better for all if some of those who would come to America set to work improving things at home, rather than aiming for the "American Dream" over here.
