DC Chapter/College Republicans FReep Gore Economic Speech -- 10/02/2002
DC Chapter | October 2, 2002 | Angelwood

Posted on 10/02/2002 6:58:03 PM PDT by Angelwood

This morning members of the DC Chapter of Free Republic assembled on the sidewalk in front of The Brookings Institution at 1775 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W., just before 9:00 a.m. with old and new signs in hand. Gore_ War_ Vet, BillF, leadpenny, kristinn and Angelwood gathered to greet Al Gore as he arrived to give a major economic speech to an invitation only crowd and to remind people that Al Gore's economic policy is to cook the books, raise taxes and sellout America's national security.

We stood facing The Brookings Institution so everyone going inside had a good view of our signs. We watched many representatives from the press and various TV news crews arrive. Eventually a few of them stopped to ask a few questions and take a few photos. We received a surreptitious thumbs up by a woman entering the building and one older gentleman stopped to look at our signs and ask questions. He didn’t like what he heard, uttered a profanity and huffed on down the street toward Dupont Circle.

Around 9:30 a.m. we were joined by five college Republicans. One of the young men, with the College Republicans National Committee, had been interviewing members of the DC Chapter last Saturday when we demonstrated against the anti-capitalists who came to DC to protest the IMF and World Bank. We welcomed the group and then there were ten protesters.

Suddenly, after our ranks doubled, there were more media people coming to snap photos and take note of our signs and the messages thereon. More and more people were arriving at the front door. Around 9:55 a.m., a huge black Cadillac SUV pulled into the driveway. The plates had been changed, but none other than Terrance McAuliffe, the DNC Chairman and Clinton moneyman, stepped out of the back of the smoke-blacked-out-windows-so-no-one-can-see-inside gas guzzler.

He had a big smile on his face as he prepared to meet his enemies. He walked toward the protest line with his hand extended. Unfortunately, no one wanted to shake his hand. Angelwood pushed a sign at him which said “DEMOCRATS ARE PC -- PARTY BEFORE COUNTRY.”

Kristinn asked McAuliffe, "Terry, tell us again how you spent $15,000 of your own money upgrading the emissions on that Escalade?" He wouldn't answer because the press was there and he said for Kristinn to talk about it with his aide. When asked why the tags were changed on the SUV, McAuliffe joked that his guys were getting speeding tickets and getting him in trouble.

He kept walking down the protest line and stopped to talk to the college Republicans. They were part of the group that showed up a few weeks ago on a college campus and embarrassed McAuliffe because 80 plus college Republicans showed up to a meeting the democrats called and only 20 plus college democrats attended. I’m sure Terry was happy to be reminded of that incident.

When Terry McAuliffe passed Kristinn as he walked back towards the building, Kristinn asked, “how much money was the DNC fined for violating campaign finance laws?” McAuliffe ignored him and kept walking. When he got to the door, Kristinn asked him, “Terry, have you got any more dead candidates that you are going to put on the ballots this November?” He disappeared quickly.

After McAuliffe and his entourage entered the building, we waited for Al Gore to arrive. There were still people and media representatives waiting in the lobby and outside the building until about ten minutes after 10:00. Suddenly word was passed to them that Gore had snuck in the back door and they scurried off. Perhaps Al was having flashbacks and was afraid we’d yell, “GET OUT OF CHENEY’S HOUSE” again.

Some signs that were used at the protest outside The Brookings Institute today read as follows:

Alan Simpson Said You Sold Your Vote on the Gulf War!

Hey Al - Take It Like A Man - You Lost!

Illegal Fundraising - FACT (with picture of Buddhist Monk, Maria Hsia and Al Gore)

Too bad you didn't get to taunt Algore, but you got McAuliffe good. I love hearing of those who are able to confront Demonrats and your signs were great. Must have been a lot of fun.

Poor Al, his speech was supposed to get lots of headlines, replays, attention. Too bad nobody but y'all seemed to notice.

Great job on McAuliffe...such a sleaze, it's a wonder he can walk without slipping on the slime.

I found it funny that the AP photographer took plenty of photos of us, yet not a one was distributed on the wires.

They did see fit to send out a photo of two hairy womyn protesting the "war" on Iraq at the Capitol, though. Next time, we take off our shirts, too!

"Who Am I Today?"

ROFL!!!

I heard some of his speech on replay on Cspan radio. It was this incredibly vague mud-slinging, not even effective mud-slingly, filled with inside-the-beltway mumbo jumbo and a fake Tennessee accent. He said "Moore's Law" for computers was that the cost halved every 18 months (not the speed), a silly mistake for someone who invented the internet to make. I listened to as much as I could before tuning the channel with the hope, nay the prayer, that the Democrats would see fit to make them their candidate again.

Oh please oh please let us compete with Al Gore for the White House again.

He said at one point that President Bush was "lost" on economic policy and should "stop and ask directions" and "find out where he was." Well, I disagree, but at least President Bush knows WHO he is, I thought to myself. Then I log on and find out the DC Chapter's got a sign for me, a sign for all occasions. And some college republican students joining in, good for them!

Sorry I couldn't go. Good questions of Terry, Kristinn. (For those of you who haven't heard Kristinn freep, he shouts just loud enough to be clearly heard in a nice, deep clear voice: there's no way one can pretend one didn't hear him.)
