He's like 7,564 years old, people that age "collapse" from cool breezes. I've been to historic landmarks younger than Strom.

Let me guess what happens in the worst-case scenario: South Carolina has a similar special election law to New Jersey's, allowing Gov. Jim Hodges to appoint a Democrat replacement and cancel November's election?

ROFLMAO. Now you've done it -- made me LOL on a serious "health issue" thread.

Behave!

That's enough to kill a healthy elephant, much less Strom.

Some help from South Carolina or other knowledgable FREEPers:

Isn't this Strom's last term this year - 2002? (If so, who's running for his seat?) And isn't he 100, or close to it?

Again, I pray he's OK and makes breaks records (as the oldest senator) and make more history.

No, that would not happen because us South Carolinians would rise up against little Elmer Fudd Hodges and beat the snot out of him. Sanford (R) will be governor in January.

Gov. Jim Hodges to appoint a Democrat replacement and cancel November's election?

I thought that would violate the 6 year term provisions. BUT....the GOP could take a page out of the Toricelli book and ask for a new ballot with a new candidate, right?

He didn't collapse. Hillary gave him a shove, a move she's been practicing on him ever since she arrived in the Senate.

yes this is Strom's last stand. The election to replace him is this November. Lindsey Gramm will probably replace him. The only bad thing is that we will have to call Hollings senior senator now.

Yes, his term runs out this Jan. Lindsay Graham (perhaps you remember him as one of the House prosecutors in the Clinton impeachment) is running against Alex Sanders (D).

Oldest member of the Senate, Sen. Strom Thurmond, R-S.C., center seated, who inches closer to his 100th birthday in December, is greeted by Meg Gregory, left, 24, and Rainey Chancellor, right, 28, both staff assistants for Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., in the Capitol, Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, in Washington. Thurmond waits to be honored by Lott and Sen. Tom Daschle for Thurmond's "48 years of service to our country." Thurmond was later given a gavel made of marble that was once part of the Capitol, and wasused today in the Senate. (AP Photo/Ken Lambert)

I watched the tribute to Strom by the Senators just this morning. Perhaps it was too much for the 99 year old..Don't think he really EVER wanted to retire.

Reminds me of the old joke...no one wants to live to be 100...unless they are 99 :~)

Haven't seen this elsewhere. SC's Dem governor could appoint Sanders, the Dem candidate running against Graham, if Strom is incapacitated. Not sure how this would affect the Iraq vote. I assume that Sanders must be pretty moderate to run in SC.
