Some help from South Carolina or other knowledgable FREEPers:

Isn't this Strom's last term this year - 2002? (If so, who's running for his seat?) And isn't he 100, or close to it?

Again, I pray he's OK and makes breaks records (as the oldest senator) and make more history.

yes this is Strom's last stand. The election to replace him is this November. Lindsey Gramm will probably replace him. The only bad thing is that we will have to call Hollings senior senator now.

Yes, his term runs out this Jan. Lindsay Graham (perhaps you remember him as one of the House prosecutors in the Clinton impeachment) is running against Alex Sanders (D).

December 5 is the day he turns 100.

And Trent Lott already had his retirement party where he was given a gavel contructed out of the original buliding materials of the Sentate honoring him as Senate Pro Tem Emeritus and the seranade by the Southern Ladies of Trent Lott's staff..

Congressman Lindsey Graham (R) is currently leading the race to fill Strom's seat.

We do have a dem governor that could appoint someone to fill Strom's seat. The regular election is one month away, I don't know how SC law would handle this.
