Jim McDermott and David Bonior have "MISLED" America about their Vietnam service.

Congressmen Jim McDermott and David Bonior have "MISLED" the American people about their Vietnam service.

During their Baghdad press conference, both McDermott and Bonior touted their Vietnam combat service, while calling President Bush a liar and praising Sadam Hussein's openness and cooperation.

Upon returning to the U.S., the two congressmen held a press conference and again highlighted their Vietnam combat service, as an obvious measure to boost their qualifications to remark on the horrors of war.

Following the news conference, McDermott appeared on MSNBC and once again clearly established at the onset of the interview that he had served in Vietnam.

And most recently, Major Garrett of Fox News reported that he had just talked with Bonoir and McDermott, and noted that both of them had "fought in the Vietnam War"

But easily available evidence indicates neither of them ever left the safety of the CONUS.

According to Congress Merge Online, McDermott's military experience is shown as:

Professional Experience (including Military):
Long Beach Naval Station, US Navy Medical Corps,1968-70
Private Practitioner, 1970-87

According to the Detroit Free Press (May 18, 2002), Bonoir's military experience is:
"...He enlisted in the Air Force after receiving his draft notice because enlisting meant he had more control over where he might be stationed; getting drafted most likely would mean being sent to Vietnam. He served in California in 1968-72 and earned his master's degree at the same time."

Why the press blindly buys off on what these two traitors say is incredible.

Just a couple of the standard journalism questions would show these two as the liars and traitors they really are:

When were you in Vietnam?

What campaign/service ribbons were you awarded?

Why are you lying about Vietnam combat service, when both of you spent your military time in the State of California ?

Just maybe someone from the press will see this and take the both of them to task.

I think they can technically be called Vietnam-era veterans, which is a far cry from a Vietnam vet.

Likewise, one can be a Vietnam vet and not be a combat veteran.

I am very careful to always refer to my service as a Vietnam - Era veteran.
While I served for 9 years, it was in the U.S. and Germany.
As someone has already noted, military people go where assigned, and do their jobs.
Personally, and in retrospect, I was lucky.
I could have been assigned a combat role, and died.
I could have lost body parts, disabled for the remainder of my life.
I could have suffered recurring, life long nightmares.
I could have ended up a POW, or MIA.

We should honor those who were given the job and did it, but understand that no one in his/her right mind seeks it.

Speaking for myself, it is quite possible to be a real Vietnam vet and still have no combat experience. My guess is that at least half the soldiers that spent a full year in Vietnam never faced any significant danger. Algore included.

This should be interesting indeed. I have always turned the channel when these two traitors have spewed their "Fondaesque Flatulence" (new phrase for grampa dave) on the sheeple so I have not heard first hand their claims of glory.

I hope they aren't that stupid as to make a claim as fought in Vietnam when there are so many ways to check such . If they have indeed lied then Dasshole needs to look into his own tribe for dishonoring veterans versus slamming GW for alledgedly doing so last week......

Dear Dasshole, have your own house in order before you throw rocks at others you seditious simplistic jerk.

Stay Safe !

we would unload the combat veterans that were wounded in Viet Nam and were being sent to the military hospital closest to their homes.

Caring for the wounded night after night is one of the toughest jobs a vet could have had.
Do not sell yourself short.
Vietnam or stateside, that is one of the most traumatic assignments a person could have.
I would not have wanted that job for all the promotions in the world.

I wish You well.

Unlike your Dad and W, these two congressmen have tried to give the impression they were Vietnam combat veterans.

There's nothing wrong with people that didn't see combat during Vietnam. When you are in the military you go where you are ordered to go.

There is something wrong with embellishing your record to score political points.

Frying bacon is not without danger and his heroism should be respected.

LOL!
Hopefully he got a Purple Heart if he ever got hit by a "shell fragment" like
Frank Burns, M.D., did in "MASH"!

(that was a "shell fragment" from an egg, for the youngsters in the crowd!)

That sounds pretty clear that he was never in Viet Nam. There is a big difference between being a Viet Nam Vet and being a Viet Nam Era Vet. I am going to call a friend of my husband who is the retired Veterans Administration Representative for this region, and Viet Nam vet, himself. Maybe he can help.

Anyone who served during the VN war is considered a VN Vet regardless where they spend their tour and actual service in VN is immaterial.

Lets not get caught up in this foolishness. If they say they are VN veterans and served in the military during the conflict, they are Viet Nam Vets. Period.

I'm legally blind in one eye and have been since early childhood. When I was 18, my Dad, a WWII Aleutian Islands vet told me there was no way I'd get into the army. So, I tried the USAF instead. I practically had to beg the doctor to pass me. I volunteered for Vietnam. They sent me to Korea for a year. When I was in Korea I volunteered again for Vietnam. This time I made it. After my tour in Vietnam I was sent back to the states. I volunteered again for Vietnam and again I was sent to Korea. By the time my tour was over, the war was too. Bonoir and McDermott are slime. Period.

But for Baghdad Jim to infer that he served in Vietnam like some hardcore boonie rat
when the closest he ever came to combat was listening to vets recount their nightmares
is beyond the pale.

I always thought he was incountry doing his work and now it turns out he was stationed
CONUS the whole time.

McDermott deserves to be slowly boiled over this one.
When he was being interviewed by Hugh Hewitt (www.newtalk870.com; M-F,
3-7 PacTime), McDermott wrapped himself in the flag and castigated Hewitt for
questioning McDermott's stance on Iraq.
McDermott used what I'm sure is the one sharp sword in his bag "Mister, did you serve in
Vietnam?".

Hewitt honestly said that he hadn't even served in the military (became draft-eligible
in 1974 and was off to Harvard).

Maybe Hewitt didn't wrap himself in glory by not volunteering in the waning days
of the Vietnam conflict...
but McDermott has slimed himself by using a Clintonesque verbal ploy and
not disabusing people of the impression that he was humping it in country,
carrying a full pack, an M-60 and ammo for everyone in the squad.

I hope McDermott gets the rectal media exam for this...oops, he's got a
Democratic deferment when it comes to critical scrutiny.

Interesting that you say that. I served in country in Vietnam from September 1964 - October 1965 at Phu Bai and then did a series of TAD's from the Phillipines from November 1965 - September 1967 which added up to approximately 18 months total in, over, under and around RVN. I was again stationed in country in August 1970 and med-evacked out in November that year. That totals about 31 months off and on. I can only recall being in serious, immediate danger by enemy action 3 times during all that time (good luck + esoteric job assignments). People who haven't been involved in war shouldn't take the perceptions given by movies like "We Were Soldiers", etc. as reality. Hollywood is squeezing several days or weeks of action into 2 hours and making things seem more intense than reality actually is. A freind once described combat as a ten car collision on highway 101 happening every other day, that felt more like it. Sometimes you're in the middle of it and can get hurt or killed, other times your just standing on the overpass watching or driving by in another lane.

Wrong, wrong, wrong

I have over 20 years in two services, am a Vietnam ERA vet, and nobody I met would EVER claim to be a Vietnam Vet if he/she didn't actually go over there.

Being alive and in doesn't count for anything except a fire watch ribbon.

I would agree with you, but both were using their Viet Nam service as verification that they knew what they were talking about. They were making the point that their Viet Nam service qualified them being there, discussing the horrors of war, and how devasting war is to women and children.

Whether or not you agree this is a foolish discussion, aren't you the least bit aggravated that the mainstream media hasn't discovered and disclosed this discrepancy?
