Sen. Bob Torricelli fought tears as he kissed his political career goodbye - but defiantly denied he'd done anything wrong, and instead painted himself as a martyr.

While Torricelli claimed to be rising "above self," his speech mixed self-pity with a long list of his own accomplishments in what one Republican called "a noxious mix" that recalled Richard Nixon.

When did we become such an unforgiving people?"

If he thinks he hasn't done anything wrong why does he seek forgiveness?

We have always been forgiving of criminals...after they've served their time!

I'm reminded of the self serving ramblings of Randy Moss a couple of days ago.

I couldn't believe how ridiculously self-serving that speech was. He made Condit look like a statesman!

I have smelled a whiff of Clintonism in the way this POS has handled himself for the past several months. In fact, all of the egregious behaivour of Dasshole, Gore, Harkin et al shows me that the Clintoons are still manipulating the party from behind the scenes. It is really great that their surrogates Reich, Reno, and Irksome Bowels are getting their asses handed to them.

"When did we become such an unforgiving people?" Out of all of his self-serving speech, this line pissed me off the most. I was screaming in the car:

When you and your fellow RATS have taken huge advantage of the American peoples good nature and tendency to forgive and used it for corrupt purposes.

That's the point when we become unforgiving you scumbag.

Very key point:

"And, by the way, a bit of advice for Democrats - do not cite Bill Clinton when your personal behavior forces you to leave office," Galen added.

it is very obvious that someone with some power told this guy to leave or else...and it probably wasn't a lawman.

"If he hasn't done anything wrong, why does he seek forgiveness?"

Darn good question. In my religious tradition, forgiveness can only be achieved through a three step process:

1) confess: You have to 'fess up....if you don't admit you did something wrong, you can't be forgiven.

2) commitment: you have to make a commitment that you will change the behavior. Asking for forgiveness while intending to do the same thing over again is "trying to pull a fast one on God"

3) contrition: you have to accept a just punishment. you did the crime, now you have to do the time.

In the age of Clinton, our society has gotten pretty darn sloppy with its "forgiveness philosophy". We allow guys like Torch to use the concept of forgiveness, not in its genuine sense, but rather as a guilt-weapon to attack those who are justifiably questioning bad behavior.

The Torch's swan song yesterday will go down in history as one of the most hilarious, revolting, and embarassing displays of narcissism by a politician ever. (Considering the existence of The Rapist, that's saying a lot.).

The Torch actually apologized to The Rapist on because "he wasn't strong enough" (to hang on to his office the way The Rapist did). I ROTFLOLed the entire time the Torch wailed through his speech--it was GREAT FUN!!!!

I would agree with your assessment that it was quite an embarrassing display of narcissism, the constant examples of what "he" did for people who did not even know of his great works. The Torch did not even have the sense to use the political plural "we" instead of "I" in his speech, which demonstrates a political "tin ear" suprising in such a hard-nosed politician.

Compare that to Ronald Reagan's farewell speech from the Oval Office, if the Torch had borrowed some of the themes, he could have made a painful and embarrassing event somewhat less so...

Now the big issue is how the Democrats will get around the 51/46 day limit for ballot modifications signed into law in 1985. Since absentee ballots have already gone out, even to Afghanistan with 35 days until the election there is no time to retract the ballots so that the military votes will be back in time for the election.

"It is really great that their surrogates Reich, Reno, and Irksome Bowels are getting their a$$es handed to them." All these political losers including the "torch" are without conscience. When torch was talking about his protection of the constitution I almost "hurled" on the rug!! These folks will probably end up as "paid" librarians at klintoons' library! A job they are all highly UN-qualified for!! WE as voters need to weed this garden for the benefit of all Americans.

Martyr? No. He made his bed and now he has to sleep in it.

But yesterday when I watched his news conference my thoughts went like this:
"Toricelli is going to come out smelling like a hero for the Democrats."

"I apologize to Bill Clinton that I did not have his strength," he said.

Should read: ""I apologize to Bill Clinton that I did not have his strength classified FB I files on members of Congress," he said.

This morning in a TODAY Show interview with Katie Curok, Toricelli did his odious best to settle an old score with NBC reporter, Lisa Myers. By name, he said her report, aired at the beginning of the interview, was all wrong. At the end of the interview, by name again, Toricelli said every name Lisa Myers gave as a possible replacement candidate choice, was wrong.

Lisa Myers was on the IMUS show later, they were laughing at Toricelli, and Lisa said Toricelli had refused to speak to her since 1997, when she reported this Toricelli moment: " Those of us who are interested in the Senate committee hearings on improper, and possibly illegal, campaign fund-raising activities in the last election saw another example last week of what little regard some politicians and bureaucrats have for the truth when they face a TV camera.

Among the several senators who made partisan speeches as the hearings opened, instead of getting on with the job they are supposed to do, was Senator Robert Toricelli, Democrat of New Jersey, who gave an emotional speech about Asian/Americans being targeted for their involvement in fund-raising. He said that one of his earliest memories of government affairs was ``seeing on a flickering screen the Kefauver hearings back in the 1950's into Mafia involvement in American politics in which derogatory remarks were made about Italian/Americans.'' He said he will never forget how that hurt him and his family.

Apparently, Senator Toricelli forgot to check his birth certificate because he had not even been born when the Kefauver hearings began, and he was five or six days old when they ended! So much for his credibility."

I think Toricelli made this TODAY Show appearance this morning for the express purpose of "getting" Lisa Myers. Katie said not a word of defense for the NBC reporter.
