The Paris based Al-Muharrir news weekly said in its recent issue that Iraqi Foriegn Minister Naji Sabri informed the Secretary General of the Arab League that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is ready to put his resignation at the disposal of an Arab summit to be held in Baghdad, being plenary or mini, but he stressed Saudi Arabia participation in the summit is necessary.

The paper quoted Sabri as saying to the Arab League Chief, Amr Moussa, that Saddam Hussein welcomes the Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz which he considers 'a friend and a dear brother.'

The magazine also said that according to well placed sources, the Iraqi President enthusiastically showed readiness to attend a mini Arab Summit if such a summit is held in Saudi Arabia.

This is absurd. Saddam would resign if and only if he thought that was the only way to save his own skin -- and if that were the case he'd simply do it without giving a rat's @$$ what the other Arabs think.

This is total B.S. No way would he resign, go into exile, be captured, etc.

I dunno... he may succumb to the inevitable to preserve his skin and spend his stashed-away billions in peace. He wouldn't be the first dictator to strike that deal. I admit that the odds are decidedly against it, though.

Wouldn't surprise too much if the torch withdrawal and this latest were coordinated by Saddam and the DNC in tandem in an effort to pull the rug out from under Bush, their mutual enemy. Curious timing.

Of course Saddam has no intention of relinquishing power. Even if he should make a big public show of leaving the country, his youngest son would (for public consumption) step up to power and we'd be no better off than now. It would amount to one more obvious ploy to build resistence, here and abroad, to Bush's plan to bring about regime change.

Saddam leaving the country should not be sufficient to deter action in Iraq. He'd eventually return when the world's and America's attentions returned to economic and other issues (exactly what Saddam and the dems are equally desperate for). Bush will hopefully demand and get the resignation of Saddam and his entire government, unfettered MILITARY access for American forces and our allies to all of Iraq until we're (Bush is) satisfied that no WMD or related programs exist, and true and open democracy is established in the country.

Anything short of this, Iraq remains a serious threat and we make these things happen by force.

I think we should at least consider your point. Perhaps there is some limit to Saddam's irrationality. Perhaps he would rather not take the lives of so many thousands if it means that he must surely die also. It could depend on whether he could arrange a secure exile within one of his "brother" Arab states (they have some strong cultural traditions on the way they treat "guests"). The US should proceed with its own agenda but also seek a clarification of what Saddam is proposing and if it would truly free Iraq from his yolk, as well as render him and his family incapable of threatening the US, Israel and his neighbors again.

Tendering a resignation to the Arab League would be in keeping with the pan-Arab Ba'athist ideology.

I suppose it's just possible he's considering cutting his losses in a way which maximizes his influence over the successor regime.

The focus must always be direct and not swayed by the talk out the the Iraqies or the Democrats. Nor should our thoughts every sway away from our true and ral purpose. We absolutely must be assured that Weapons of Mass Destruction are not available to Terrorists or pheudo terrorists that might end up in the hands of Enemies of the United States.

It would be nice if Sodamned Insane would resign and allow the complete inspection of every potential site in Iraq for weapons of mass destruction.

However, the likelihood of Sodamned Insane resigning is as improbable as the likelihood the Democrats, aka the Demwits, will cease being corrupt.
