Harkin orders probe; 'mole' found

Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin announced Thursday night that his re-election campaign had hired a lawyer to investigate what the attorney considered the legal but "unacceptable" conduct of Harkin's campaign staff.

The move came just hours after a former Harkin congressional aide emerged as the person suspected of recording a meeting between Greg Ganske, Harkin's Republican opponent, and two dozen of Ganske's supporters.

Tired of seeing career-ending scandal "trickle down," Sen. Harkin decided to let it "percolate up" for a while.

It's funny that the party that made such a big deal about Watergate is now saying "no big deal" on this one. This was every bit as premeditated as the taping and subsequent leak of the Newt Gingrich phone call a couple of years ago. And remember, the Democrats (Harkin campaign) denied any involvement in this and then had to backtrack, which means perjury and cover-up. The law in Iowa is pretty clear on this that if the clandestine taping is meant to do harm to someone, then it is illegal. When the Harkin campaign made a transcript of the contents of the tape and released it, that was meant to harm Ganske. It would be nice if the net effect of this was to get Harkin defeated.

It depends on who's doing the polling as to who's ahead - and the leads are within the poll's marign for error - pundits now saying it has switched from Dem-leading to toss-up - I hope that trend continues.

As someone said earlier, "Keep this story on the front burner". It is so important that this story get coverage because, like with all the other stories of corruption in the democrat party, if the story was about a Republican taping a sensitive strategy meeting, that Republican would be finished.

Unlike Downey in the Gore campaign who immediately turned over the purloined tape to the FBI......Harken sought to use the tape for political gain.

Heard last night that the Iowa talk radio shows are all over this.......and Harken is in deep doo doo.........er, make that dung!

Heard that the Harkin campaign has hired a Toricelli operative to help them on this. Of course, that was before the T corruption document was released yesterday.

This would be a great point to bring out and I am sure it will be mentioned on talk radio.

Any idea how Ganske and Harkin are polling in Iowa?

Before this story broke, Ganske had an internal poll of likely voters which showed Harkin ahead by 4 points: Harkin 45 - Ganske 41.

A less scientific poll done by KCCI TV, prior to this story breaking (about 500 names pulled from a phone book type of poll,,,,, not knowing how many of them are actually voters) showed Harkin ahead by double digets.

I imagine the Ganske campaign will let this fester awhile before they bankroll another poll.

The phone lines to the talk shows are melting down. The Des Moines Register, lover of all things liberal, is on this like flies on S _ _ _! Word has it the Register reporters are torqued off because the Harkinistas originally denied knowledge of the taping when the reporters made their first inquiries.

The worst thing that could happen to Ganske is to have this thing be resolved quickly. The longer the Harkinistas hedge, the better for us.
