Laura Bush confident in Mexico-U.S. immigration agreement

EFE - 9/26/2002

U.S. First Lady Laura Bush said she was convinced an immigration agreement could be reached between Mexico and the United States, because their leaders want it.

Mrs. Bush, who participated in the 11th Conference of the Wives of Heads of State and Government in Mexico City on Wednesday, said, "I do see a solution to this problem."

In statements to the Mexican press made in Washington and published Wednesday in Reforma daily, Laura Bush explained she and her husband had lived in Texas for many years and have a special sensitivity for the problems of the U.S. Hispanic community.

"There are so many stories about immigrants and the children of immigrants in the United States. Our whole country is made up of immigrants who were able to overcome poverty and obtain good jobs. There are many examples in my husband's administration," the first lady noted.

Mrs. Bush acknowledged that the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks had set back the agenda between Mexico and the United States, but insisted that Presidents Bush and Fox "are going to meet again to try to revitalize and refocus the issue of immigration."

The first lady said she felt "a special bond with Mexico" and recalled the couple had spent their honeymoon in Mexico City and the Caribbean resort of Cozumel. The first lady is expected to focus on childhood poverty as she participates in this summit.

Our whole country is made up of immigrants who were able to overcome poverty and obtain good jobs.

Erm...NO, Senora Bush..this whole country is NOT made up of immigrants.

Not that it matters but AN OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of us are NATIVE to this country and did NOT immigrate here.

Exactly. We are all citizens of the world. Right? I bet that you can't wait for our big hemispheric government. I bet that you're ready for the Amero.

And Jorge Bush II will deliver it whether we like it or not. That is unless I missed something in the embossed letter he sent me from his Crawford Ranch which struck me as flipping off anyone that had a problem with the open borders, unlimited 3rd world immigration agenda he was “obviously” promoting.

I was perusing the thread and saw your comment. I cannot find the data at my fingertips, but I believe this is no longer true.(if you consider 1st and second generation)

If you use birth in the USA as a defining parameter (which Mrs. Bush was not), then it would be true.(barely)

Yup, Mexico is ethnically cleansing its native population north, to us. Everybody but us apparently knows it. Which is why the Holy Father said what he said to Fox when he visited MX.

I think the Pope's lecture to Fox should have also been directed at his co-conspirator in this mess, namely George Bush. They are two peas in a pod. Fox could never get away with exporting his poor to America if it wasn't for Bush's complicity.

I didn't receive a letter. Hmm. Well, I suppose that it's good that I didn't.

George W. Bush is obviously a globalist.

Don't miss O'Reilly tonight. Maybe we'll all find out what a "Chicano studies" professor really is. My guess is a fifth column Marxist agitator.

I saw on another thread where you call for the arrest of the professor.
Didn't go well?

Send some faxes out on the numbersusa site and call the WH a few times, you'll get the letter.

I see nothing in her statement that indicates that she supports illegal immigration. I see that she indicates that there is a 'problem' that needs to be solved.

It would be impolitic to actually come out for Illegals. That's why phrases like "undocumentated workers," and "migrants" are often used.

Look, I know you ladies like the President. I do too. And I know you think he has the best of intentions regarding Illegals. I do too.

Unfortuanately, I believe his intentions, however well-meaning, are dead wrong.

I'm not going to persuade you this evening, but let me tell you why I think so.

President Bush has a long record of being wrong on Illegals, going back to 1994, when he took time out from his first gubernatorial campaign to join the more pubicized statements of Jack Kemp and William Bennett in condemning Prop #187. In doing so, he helped paint Republicans who are anti-Illegal as anti-immigrant. Many Californias remember what these three did, and we don't appreciate it.

Prior to 9/11, President Bush was in active negotiations with Vicente Fox to "normalize" over 3 million Mexican Illegals. He couldn't call it Amnesty because, even then, Americans wouldn't stand for it, most of you included. After 9/11, things went on the back burner, but the President made it clear he intended to press forward with Amnesties when he had a rider attatched to the Homeland Security bill that would have again extended Bill Clinton's Section 245(i) Amnesty.

The extension died in the Senate when it was killed by Robert Byrd, of all people. So the Homeland Security bill landed on Bush's desk without it. He said at the time that he regretted signing it without Section 245(i). There is no reason to believe he has changed his mind in this.

If 9/11 didn't wake Bush up on Illegals, how would the likes Robert Byrd?

The Administration has not issued one unambiguous statement indicating any seriousness on dealing with Illegals. Every scrap of progress made in the last year has been exclusively WoT-related.

The Republican National Committee offers issue questionairres that omit immigration as a topic of concern. It is the elephant in the room this election. The INS routinely lets Illegals go free in publicized cases, with no response from the White House.

All circumstances point to a calculated silence from the President on this matter, as he is aware of how unpopular his views truly are. That is the simplest and the best explanation for his words and deeds.

What of Vicente Fox's publicized "snub" of President Bush over a Texas execution of a Mexican national last August?

My cynical view is that Bush couldn't give Fox what he wanted on "normalization" of Mexican Illegals just prior to the election, and Fox couldn't afford to come home empty-handed. I believe the execution snub was a negotiated dodge to get both Bush and Fox off the hook.

We'll see the proof of this when they become good chums again after November. We all know how the Bush family has long political memories, and nurses grudges against those it perceives as disloyal. This snub by Fox would ordinarily make him persona non grata with the Bushes. That turns out not to be the case, as we saw yesterday. So the August snub wasn't a snub at all.

And the First Lady's comments yesterday, intended for Mexican consumption, are entirely consistent with this hypothesis.

I hope I'm wrong, and I'll be happy to eat massive crow if I am. But I'm afraid that I'm not, as we shall see.

OK, PhiKapMom, this is the 4th report of such a Crawford letter.

We need to figure out if these things are genuine or not. WRhine, did your letter come in a brown or whate envelope? You mentioned that you sent faxes through the NumbersUSA site and also called the White House. Did you get the impression the letter you got was in response to any particular communique?

I was using Webster's definition of immigrant which is as follows:

im·mi·grant: one that immigrates : as a : a person who comes to a country to take up permanent residence

Under this definition, most of us in the USA are not immigrants....and not just 'barely'. Over 90% of us are not immigrants under Webster's definition.

Senor and Senora Bush and other immigration cheerleaders who constantly tell the blatant lie "we are all immigrants" or "we are a nation of immigrants" have corrupted the meaning of the word in order to push their poltically correct agenda which has already Balkanized Houston and Los Angeles and is heading north very rapidly.

The envelope was the same color as the letter which (I’m not good at colors) looked beige to me. As other Freepers mentioned, the paper was of high quality and it had the WH seal embossed at the top of the letterhead. The signature of Bush was definitely machine printed.

Did you get the impression the letter you got was in response to any particular communique?

Saber, I think it probably was in response to the numbersusa faxes I have sent out. Though I can't be sure since I also called the WH a few times and left my name and address.

Your post is right on the money. Captain Clinton steered the Titanic America into the iceberg concerning immigration. He proudly boasts that fact.

Now that the hole is in the hull, Captain Bush is trying to keep Titanic America afloat.

Stay tuned for part II.

PRND21, let's face it, you aren't interested or have ever been interested in debating any issue regarding illegal immigration other than making snide remarks. You are either unable to cobble together a coherent thought on this topic or are just here to add rancor for “whatever” reason. I think sweetliberty tagged you well as a "Jerk", and the picture he provided is exactly how I envision you as you snipe away at your desk.
