Laura Bush confident in Mexico-U.S. immigration agreement

EFE - 9/26/2002

U.S. First Lady Laura Bush said she was convinced an immigration agreement could be reached between Mexico and the United States, because their leaders want it.

Mrs. Bush, who participated in the 11th Conference of the Wives of Heads of State and Government in Mexico City on Wednesday, said, "I do see a solution to this problem."

In statements to the Mexican press made in Washington and published Wednesday in Reforma daily, Laura Bush explained she and her husband had lived in Texas for many years and have a special sensitivity for the problems of the U.S. Hispanic community.

"There are so many stories about immigrants and the children of immigrants in the United States. Our whole country is made up of immigrants who were able to overcome poverty and obtain good jobs. There are many examples in my husband's administration," the first lady noted.

Mrs. Bush acknowledged that the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks had set back the agenda between Mexico and the United States, but insisted that Presidents Bush and Fox "are going to meet again to try to revitalize and refocus the issue of immigration."

The first lady said she felt "a special bond with Mexico" and recalled the couple had spent their honeymoon in Mexico City and the Caribbean resort of Cozumel. The first lady is expected to focus on childhood poverty as she participates in this summit.

How much time do you think the US has left unless things are turned around soon?

Does your Kroger or Target have a layaway policy?

A target manager in Jefferson City, MO once told a coworker of mine, when she asked if they had a layaway department, that Target "wanted to attract a higher class of customer" and accepting layaways would hinder this. This was in 1997-1999, roughly.

If the Mexicans in the area have primarily low wage jobs, they may choose to shop somewhere where they can pay for clothes, furniture, and other nonperishables over 90 days if necessary. Just a possibility.

I used to like her.

Now she's another Hitlery in the making. My God, these people really do not realize the implications of an agreement like this. I hereby surrender and declare Pat Buchanan as 1000% correct. He was right. I was wrong. And we will lose our national identity and freedom as a result of these new looney policies.

" I can go into Target or Kroger and hardly see any Mexicans"

You would here. If anything, Kroger may even be worse than Walmart.

Kaylar - That is totally uncalled for! Look at things realistically and logically and talk to people who utilize the commodities available.

Kaylar - If I need unskilled labor and you and another person came to me looking for a job - you wanted three dollars an hour and the other person only wanted one dollar, which is good business sense? The farmers in this country live from crop to crop. They are paying off a continous cycle of loans - go and talk to them and find out why the family farm is going out the door?

Americans have been conditioned to believe that we all should have two cars, a large elegant home, a college education and all wear white collars.

If we are union, we expect more money and benefits than the normal employer can pay.

Americans have put America in the position that she is in right now. You and me and our parents and grandparents did it. No one else.

I see nothing in her statement that indicates that she supports illegal immigration. I see that she indicates that there is a 'problem' that needs to be solved. I see in her statement that she loves the people of Mexico.

I don't see this statement as anything but kind and hopeful words, and I see many jumping to conclusions and drawing inferences that aren't there because that's the way they want to see things.

She has a soft spot in her heart for Mexico because she and her husband honeymooned there. Who wouldn't?

If I'm not right, I'll apologize to you.

I don't know. I have never used lay-away. I know that K-Mart has a lay-away.

Maybe you're right. What if you aren't?

Well then we keep our eyes open to see

I really don't expect the First Lady to go into this conference and bad mouth the Mexican people .. that is ... well bad manners

Don't get me wrong. I know a few schoolmarms that would deport the pests in their Toyotas themselves.

Tancredo didn't hammer that whack job Chicano nearly hard enough. That scumbag Torres was outrageous. Six or 7 minutes isn't enough time to do justice for anyone's viewpoint, unfortunately.

Around here, the Mexicans go to a local independent grocery store. In fact, if you go into this store, roughly half of the customers are Mexican. Several of the stores in the same shopping shopping center are "Mexican" shops.

That's exactly right. A whole lot of overreacting going on here over a nice lady saying non-specific, non-political nice things.

Yeah, there's plenty of that around here too. Personally, I'm getting so sick of the whole issue that I'm even losing my taste for Mexican food. Weird huh?

I agree completely. He was evasive, convoluted, and illogical. Tancredo could have cleaned his clock, if the time hadn't run out.

Well I can understand their concerns because it is a sensative topic for them .. But I also know how the press can play games with their reporting

And that is why I am taking the wait and see approach

You're stating the same worn-out old lines. Many people just want to provide for their family. This talk of elegant home, luxury cars, etc. doesn't refer to all people. Things are more complicated than that.

You appear to support the hiring of illegal aliens, for it is "good business sense". This, in my opinion, reveals an example of greed, for it shows that some people will place a few extra dollars over the law and what is needed for a prosperous future America.

Maybe 10 years.

I think they're laughing at us...I really do. The Republicans step up to the plate and defeat Kyoto, Icc, ABM Treaty, etc, and we applaud and cheer. But every thing GWB and the Republicans do to fight off the sovereignty-destroying forces-the UN, the EU, various "multilateral treaties", God knows what else-can and will be reversed as soon as demographics make the Democratic party unbeatable. They think we're too stupid and ignorant not to notice what uncontrolled immigration is doing to us, and how most of the "new Americans" tend to vote Democratic-a trend which cannot be stopped by anything short of the Republicans offering even more "racial spoils" to the minority voters than do the Democrats. Both parties are filled with the kind of people who assume they'll be running things once a "global government" of unelected officials is imposed on the world. To be able to do as they please without being held back by national laws or those pesky voters! Bliss....The republicans throw us a bone (eg ICC withdrawal) and that is to keep us quiet until it's too late. The Democrats, once their power is consolidated via vote fraud and other means will take the rap for selling out the USA-but it's people in both parties quietly working to destroy what's left of the Constitution, our borders, our economy, our sovereignty...

Man, I've depressed myself.
