Laura Bush confident in Mexico-U.S. immigration agreement

EFE - 9/26/2002

U.S. First Lady Laura Bush said she was convinced an immigration agreement could be reached between Mexico and the United States, because their leaders want it.

Mrs. Bush, who participated in the 11th Conference of the Wives of Heads of State and Government in Mexico City on Wednesday, said, "I do see a solution to this problem."

In statements to the Mexican press made in Washington and published Wednesday in Reforma daily, Laura Bush explained she and her husband had lived in Texas for many years and have a special sensitivity for the problems of the U.S. Hispanic community.

"There are so many stories about immigrants and the children of immigrants in the United States. Our whole country is made up of immigrants who were able to overcome poverty and obtain good jobs. There are many examples in my husband's administration," the first lady noted.

Mrs. Bush acknowledged that the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks had set back the agenda between Mexico and the United States, but insisted that Presidents Bush and Fox "are going to meet again to try to revitalize and refocus the issue of immigration."

The first lady said she felt "a special bond with Mexico" and recalled the couple had spent their honeymoon in Mexico City and the Caribbean resort of Cozumel. The first lady is expected to focus on childhood poverty as she participates in this summit.

I even heard last night on Fox that there is an official policy in urban police departments to NOT cooperate with INS and border patrol in apprehending illegals.

NYC is a biggie in this. It's a designated 'safe zone' for illegals. Funny, there's a lot of ME illegals there. Happy happy joy joy.

Notice how he never denied he hired illegals and/or worked for the Mexican consulate...

You've never denied having three legs. Does that mean you are a tri-ped?
I mow my own lawn...do you?

But she had *no* business saying anything at all about immigration.

You need to go back to school. Start with the First Ammendment.

I don't agree with the trend that was happening BEFORE 9/11 with regard to immigration in President Bush's administration. It is an important issue. I do think President Bush has shown he is capable of changing his opinion when proved wrong. I think he has shown a shift in immigration. There are steps that need to be taken. Both countries working together to accomplish a working relationship and one that would benefit BOTH countries would be a good thing. Improved quality of life for Mexicans, would allow them to stay in their own country.

It is a complex issue.

I'm not for more open borders or even allowing people who came here illegally to STAY.

But I noticed how what the First Lady "did say", could have been about a number of things regarding CHILDREN!!

There WERE NO QUOTATION marks around the comment everyone is attributing to her.

This thread is mere "shark attack" mentality at its best, I SHOULD SAY AT ITS WORST!!

This President inherited a NUMBER of HUGE problems. 9/11 being of the most important in rank of priority.

I think we have some really big issues taking place in our country right now. And misquoting our First Lady is not on the top of my list as important!

I follow a lot of threads you are on, and we share simular interests. I have great respect for you. But I disagree on this one, and feel we need to wait and see if she really quoted a policy, or if her words were taken out of context.

She is an awesome First Lady. Refreshing to say the least..

This is a really "rabid" thread. IMHO

FRegards!

Okay, I agree the influx of illegal workers must be stopped. But, where are does citizens or legal residents that will take over the demeaning tasks. I hope we have enough willing Americans to fill in the gap, truly.

245(i) wouldn't allow them to improve their situation in Mexico. They'd be here. I can't support that and neither do a majority of Americans. Why does Bush continue to support it? There has been no shift if his recent letter from Crawford is to be believed. He's waiting till after mid-term elections to push it through. The LA airport shooter was a 245(i) recipient. Bush has a tin ear on this and with the economy still hurting a bundle it'll only hurt the pubbies in a major way in '04. I fear we'll end up with Hillary because of it.

They fill their cars with friends and then deliberately stage auto accidents, then sue the other party, claiming to have been injured. Or they work briefly at some job (using fake IDs) then claim a mental or physical injury and file a lawsuit. I have literally seen depositions where the illegal claimed that, "My boss yelled at me, and that traumatized me, so now I can never work again and need to collect workers' comp!" It must work, too, or they wouldn't do it!

--------------------------------

They have caught on quickly and they don't need to speak English to do it. Their lawyers will do it for them. It's an industry that supports illegal immigration and invasion.

She never said that she supported abortion. What she did say was that she didn't think that Roe v. Wade should be overturned. As I recall she was put on the spot with the question.

"I liked Keyes, too"

So do I. I voted for him in the primary, although I voted for Bush in the election.

There is ~8% unemployment in my area. Who do you think did these jobs before the invasion of illegals? When I was a kid, the chicken processing plants in the SE US paid well enough that black and white AMERICANS with a high school education could support a family on their wages. Now, the chicken plants import illegals to do this work, pay them 1/3 what they were paying the locals who've been intimidated and threatened out by the new employees. The employers now pocket the difference in wages, expect the tax payer to provide healthcare and other items for the illegals. HAve you seen chicken get cheaper?

They don't just do the demeaning jobs. They work at carpet manufacturers. Furniture manufacturers, and many more that used to employ Americans at decent (but nowhere near astronomical) wages. Now the Americans are working 2-3 jobs at McD's and trying to make ends meet, the manufacturers are squealing with delight at their profits and the American people are stuck with the problem of illegals. I haven't seen any products get cheaper in the past 15 years that aren't already imported. Is your carpet cheaper? Furniture? produce? processed meat?

Now it's hard to find construction crews that aren't all or mostly illegals. I know lots of Americans that would work construction, but not for the $4/$6/hr with no healthcare like the illegals. The illegals get paid cash under the table most times with no SS or taxes taken out. We pay their healthcare. It's insane. Not to mention a good many of the illegals in my neighborhood now are the kind that wear head linen. In fact, several of them were busted by the feds during terrorist sweeps in sep/oct 01.

I wouldn't be surprised. This is the fourth consecutive thread on this topic that he has seen fit to disrupt.

------------------------

I regard his initial stance as obviously highly destructive and one no competent man with the best interest of this nation would consider. It It was changed, not because he though it wrong, but because it was a political necessity to do so. The change was, and is, temporaty until the original plan can be reimplemented.

His most recent letter from Crawford, in August, stated that he planned to continue to push for congressional approval of 245(i). He did last spring. He's just waiting till after mid-term elections.

What about illegals who have anchor babies? Do they qualify for welfare? (This is a sincere question.)

They almost certainly qualify for ADC (Aid to Dependant Children). Got me.

I work in the legal field, and I am here to tell you that illegals can and do sue.

Actually, since you mention it, I am acquainted with a legal aid office, funded by the Farm Labor union, that operates here. They have a paralegal who goes out and inspects the farms, to make sure they have porta-johns and water for the workers. He helps them with wage disputes, filling out forms for whatever. If a farmer tries to take advantage, illegally, he passes the issue back to the home office and the lawyers take over.

So, although the illegal workforce is certainly more docile than are citizens, things are changing. It is not like it was a generation ago. I am glad for the work this guy does. No one deserves to be mistreated. And anyway, if employers are forced to observe all the labor laws whether their workers are legal or not, it takes away some of the incentive to hire illegals.

Got me twice.

Dumb remarks beg for correction.
Do you also belive that there are zero good jobs available in America?

If so, you're wrong. If not, why are you talking crap behind my back?
Cowards and immigrant bashers seem to go hand in hand.

Are you saying that Gainesville is growing towards the south?

I have not been there (G'ville) for over a year, but what I did see of it, looks like growth pushing toward the northwest. Mostly medical/professional. But coming in to Gainesville from the south end is unrecognizable. Not overly fond of Gwinnett County anymore, either---the traffic! Yikes...
