Laura Bush confident in Mexico-U.S. immigration agreement

U.S. First Lady Laura Bush said she was convinced an immigration agreement could be reached between Mexico and the United States, because their leaders want it.
Mrs. Bush, who participated in the 11th Conference of the Wives of Heads of State and Government in Mexico City on Wednesday, said, "I do see a solution to this problem."
In statements to the Mexican press made in Washington and published Wednesday in Reforma daily, Laura Bush explained she and her husband had lived in Texas for many years and have a special sensitivity for the problems of the U.S. Hispanic community.
"There are so many stories about immigrants and the children of immigrants in the United States. Our whole country is made up of immigrants who were able to overcome poverty and obtain good jobs. There are many examples in my husband's administration," the first lady noted.
Mrs. Bush acknowledged that the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks had set back the agenda between Mexico and the United States, but insisted that Presidents Bush and Fox "are going to meet again to try to revitalize and refocus the issue of immigration."
The first lady said she felt "a special bond with Mexico" and recalled the couple had spent their honeymoon in Mexico City and the Caribbean resort of Cozumel. The first lady is expected to focus on childhood poverty as she participates in this summit.

Yes. Assimilation is an important part of the immigration picture. In the last decade we have allowed in more people than can assimilate, and we need to take a "time out".

I agree with your numbers. I only have a problem with large numbers of Muslims entering. In the last decade several million have come in, as anyone who has been to a convenience store lately can attest. They do not assimilate easily. Many of them are decent people, but thats beside the point.

I think that may already have been done. The baby is still an American citizen, but the mother still has to go home. The baby can come back when he's 18. Or he can stay with relatives already in the US.

I understand what you're saying. I would still allow husbands, wives, underage children. Anything less isn't humane. Anything beyond that should be, as you say, only part of the criteria for admission.
The Border Patrol beefed-up 500% on the border.
I agree. If you go to the border, it is humorous. In the afternoon, hundreds of people will cross to the US side and wait, smoking, talking, kicking a ball around. As soon as it gets dark, they will go for it.
A couple hundred yards away is one, lone, Border Patrol agent in his pickup. Several hundred yards away, another one.
You can see what is going to happen. 500 or 1000 people heading north as it gets dark. He will get out, tag a couple of them. They won't resist, why bother? He will take them down to the office, fill out a form, arrange a bus ride back for them, and the following day, they will make their crossing.
I honestly don't understand why the illegals risk their lives crossing the desert when they can cross right there at town, and there is nothing anyone can do, not with the manpower that is there. So, yes, 500%.

The existing INS don't seem to want to do their jobs. We have to find some that will work. There have been numerous cases where police will pick up illegals for some other issue, and call INS to come and get them. INS says, we're busy. Let them go. Mind you, these are people already in custody.
Welfare for illegals is eliminated.
Actually, this is already illegal. The people on welfare may look hispanic, but they are probably citizens.
I would deny welfare to legal residents. Actually, one of Gingrich's reforms did just that, and I believe my president, who I love, reversed the policy so that residents can now get welfare again. Gee. Can't believe it.
Fines on businesses who hire illegals. (Actually, just the following of the law)
This is the big one. This law is simply not enforced. Ignore anyone badmouthing illegals, who will not prosecute the companies. They are just demogoguing the issue. Former Governor Pete Wilson of California comes to mind. The illegals are doing what anyone with guts would do, they are going wherever they have to go to feed their families. It may be illegal, but you or I in their shoes would do the same. The onus should be on the companies hiring them. They are undermining labor law, they are undermining the economy, they are undermining the rule of law.
They should be in the pen.
They get around it by helping the folks get fake papers, by using labor contractors, who if busted simply go bankrupt and change business names.
This right here is the key to the whole problem. You don't even need to seal the border, though I support doing it, but you don't need to do it if we simply start prosecuting the people who are hiring illegals.
I understand why they do it, there is a lot to be said for a docile workforce that can't complain about conditions to the law. Or can't sue if they are injured. Its not just about money; a lot of illegals are making very good money. Its about control of the workers, for the companies. If we are serious, that is how we can stop it.
There *are* NO more good jobs in the US.
Better hang on to it. My gardner will do it cheaper.

Whoa.. wait a minute. How dare you compare this First Lady to Hitlery. First Lady Bush is NOT interested in making policy, nor has she ever stated "WE ARE THE PRESIDENCY!!"
She stays in the background doing charitable things and things related to teaching (she was a teacher and a librarian) and that is the correct position for a First Lady to be in. I "DO" expect that type of involvement by our First Lady. NOT HEALTH CARE REFORM, or thinking she is the President like Clinton did.

Some people (God help us) will be happy when the entire United States looks like LA. Let me tell you, there will be a MAJOR war in this country before that happens. At the rate things are going, we are not too far from that point right now.

I work in the legal field, and I am here to tell you that illegals can and do sue. They frequently sue. There are no negative consquences for them at all. I've seen workers' comp lawsuits, auto accident lawsuits, all kinds of lawsuits filed by illegals. Absolutely nothing is done about it. In fact, the defendants usually settle out of court and give the illegals $10,000 or so. The illegals remain in this country, free to file more lawsuits. Many even make their living this way. They fill their cars with friends and then deliberately stage auto accidents, then sue the other party, claiming to have been injured. Or they work briefly at some job (using fake IDs) then claim a mental or physical injury and file a lawsuit. I have literally seen depositions where the illegal claimed that, "My boss yelled at me, and that traumatized me, so now I can never work again and need to collect workers' comp!" It must work, too, or they wouldn't do it!
Same all over Arkansas too.
