Laura Bush confident in Mexico-U.S. immigration agreement

U.S. First Lady Laura Bush said she was convinced an immigration agreement could be reached between Mexico and the United States, because their leaders want it.

Mrs. Bush, who participated in the 11th Conference of the Wives of Heads of State and Government in Mexico City on Wednesday, said, "I do see a solution to this problem."

In statements to the Mexican press made in Washington and published Wednesday in Reforma daily, Laura Bush explained she and her husband had lived in Texas for many years and have a special sensitivity for the problems of the U.S. Hispanic community.

"There are so many stories about immigrants and the children of immigrants in the United States. Our whole country is made up of immigrants who were able to overcome poverty and obtain good jobs. There are many examples in my husband's administration," the first lady noted.

Mrs. Bush acknowledged that the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks had set back the agenda between Mexico and the United States, but insisted that Presidents Bush and Fox "are going to meet again to try to revitalize and refocus the issue of immigration."

The first lady said she felt "a special bond with Mexico" and recalled the couple had spent their honeymoon in Mexico City and the Caribbean resort of Cozumel. The first lady is expected to focus on childhood poverty as she participates in this summit.

In Georgia, the illegals are working in in the textile (carpet) mills in Dalton (northwest GA), and they are also working in the poultry plants in Gainesville (Northeast GA).

In fact, Dalton's population is almost half Mexican. A large increase from the small minority ten years ago. Gainesville is around thirty to forty percent Mexican, an increase similar to that of Dalton's.

In the Atlanta area, nearly every construction crew is over seventy-five percent Mexican. Many are one hundred percent Mexican. County road crews are often fifty percent of more Mexican. The roofing industry is now starting to see a Mexican influx. Landscaping has had a significant Mexican presence for quite a while. Many kitchens of higher end restaurants, as well as fast food restaurants, are Mexican employed. The gas stations are starting to become foreign owned (mostly Indian and Pakistani). The hotels are similar.

It's looking like total illegal alien and foreign take-over.

Welcome to the real world. That precedent was set by none other than Hillary Clinton. I felt the same way when Hillary was trying to ram nationalized healthcare down our collective throats. Kinda sucks when your side has to play by the same rules, huh?

I essentially agree with your plan. I would add my personal favorite, National Guard patrols of rural border areas.

The idea that illegal immigration is required to keep labor costs down assumes that it is in the citizen's interest to keep labor costs low.

Mexican workers are good workers, its true, and they will do tough jobs under tough conditions, at modest pay.

But that is irrelevant.

If the pay is sufficient, and if the treatment is fair, Americans will work. It does no good to implement labor laws mandating fair treatment if we then subvert those same laws by using a workforce that is afraid to complain.

And, the labor cost is only a tiny percentage of the final cost of the product. You could double the wage paid to the picker, and the cost of the tomato would go up by only a couple of cents. Would you not pay a couple of cents to get your country back?

The largest hirers of illegals are the meat packing plants. At the rate that animals are processed, remember, these plants are mostly automated, you again could double the wage and the final price would go up almost nothing at all.

As I have said before, I differ from some of the other writers here, in that I like Mexicans, and have a lot of respect for them as workers and as people. I would add them to your list of preferred countries. But the numbers need to be about a 10th of what they are now.

And immigration from enemy countries should be by invitation only.

I'm afraid Hillary will be the replacement if she senses any weakness in Bush. If Bush, like his father is no longer the temporary beneficiary of war and crisis in the middle East, he'll share the same fate as his daddy.

I believe soon after the election she said she supports Roe vs. Wade. I don't recall anything about her personally supporting abortion.

Live more cheaply, make less money, try to get by a little more. It's like quicksand...the more you struggle, the faster you sink. I'm shrugging in about 4 weeks. Completely. Going to be a stay at home mom. They simply will not get my taxes. I will probably not be replaced at work because of a hiring freeze. We will learn to live with far less. I will consume and buy much less as will my hubby. I advise you to do the same as much as possible.
