LOS ANGELES FIRST CITY IN NATION TO VOTE TO BAN 50 CALIBER SNIPER RIFLES

WASHINGTON, DC—The Violence Policy Center (VPC) today applauded the Los Angeles City Council for passing a ban on the sale and possession of 50 caliber sniper rifles. This marks the first time that a legislative body has voted to ban these weapons of war. The groundbreaking measure was sponsored by Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas and passed unanimously.

The legislative effort, which received strong support from the LA Police Department, was spearheaded by the Violence Prevention Coalition of Greater Los Angeles, aided by the Pacific Center for Violence Prevention, and based on research by the Violence Policy Center (VPC).

“With today’s unanimous vote to ban 50 caliber sniper rifles, the City of Los Angeles has sent a very strong and clear message to California and the rest of the nation: We must bring these weapons of death and destruction under control,” Tom Diaz, VPC senior policy analyst states.

The Council instructed the City Attorney to model the new measure regulating 50 caliber sniper weapons on the city ordinance restricting the sale and possession of assault weapons. The VPC was the first organization in the country to alert the American public to the dangers of 50 caliber sniper rifles on the civilian market with its landmark 1999 study, One Shot, One Kill: Civilian Sales of Military Sniper Rifles.

The 50 caliber sniper rifle is an extremely powerful weapon which uses high-caliber ammunition at distances averaging between 400 and 1,700 yards. These same military armaments—designed and sold for the express purpose of killing people and disabling key command and control outposts—are now freely available across America's gun shop counters. As a result, this ideal tool for assassination and destruction is now easily accessible to terrorists, criminals, and the mentally unstable. The VPC continued to warn lawmakers and the public of the dangers of 50 calibers in its 2001 study Voting from the Rooftops: How the Gun Industry Armed Osama bin Laden, Other Foreign and Domestic Terrorists, and Common Criminals with 50 Caliber Sniper Rifles, which explains the enormous range of 50 caliber sniper rifles, the explosive power of special armor- piercing and armor-piercing incendiary ammunition easily available in the United States, and why this war-fighting power in the hands of Al Qaeda and other terrorists creates a grave threat to all Americans. The study also details: how 50 caliber sniper rifles can create disaster at industrial facilities handling explosive, toxic, or volatile chemicals—the kind of threat terrorism analysts already warn transforms a target into a weapon; a report for the Air Force which warns that 50 caliber sniper rifles endanger aircraft, bulk fuel tanks, fuel trucks, and other airport targets; and, the rash of 50 caliber sniper rifles found in the arsenals of domestic terrorist and extremist groups, including one that plotted to kill a state governor, U.S. Senator, and federal judges. “We have made extensive research available to Attorney General John Ashcroft, the FBI, and key officials throughout the U.S.,” Diaz adds. “We call on them to support the pending legislation sponsored by U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein and Congressman Henry Waxman.” *** To obtain a copy of any of the VPC 50 caliber studies please call Naomi Seligman at 202.822.8200 X105 or visit the VPC website at www.vpc.org. —END—

Demagoguery at its finest. Hitler would be proud.

When was one ever used in the US to commit a terrorist act? I can think of three terror instances where box cutters were used, and thousands perished. Why don't we ban them?

Speaking of Hitler, I guess Diaz and his ilk hope to be on the outside of the gas chamber after they've destroyed our Republic.

Uh, what deaths? what destruction?

I'm sure the current owners exercize great control.

I'm trying to imagine someone knocking over a liquer store with one of these and then beating a hasty retreat. If they made it out the door, I doubt they could run half a block with one.

.30 calibers will be next.

JFK was shot with a 6.5mm, MLK with a .30-'06. Why didn't the assasins choose .50 caliber rifles if they're so great for assasinations?

Someone should tell LA the reason for the right to bear arms is not to protect hunting, it's to protect freedom. Socialists hate guns because they know it empowers the individual, reducing the power of the state.

Actually, I'll bet that it won't get overturned in court, because in the Nordyke v. Alameda and Great Western Shows v. Los Angeles, the California Supreme Court has ruled that the ONLY areas of firearms regulation off-limits to cities and counties are in the licensing and registration of firearms. Everything else is fair game.

This is why it is critically important that you get on the mailing list of the Thermopylae Group to get ready for the fight to amend the California Constitution with the right to keep and bear arms. Even if you don't live in California - what happens here, be it emissions controls, socialist family leave wealth redistribution, etc, eventually makes its way across the nation.

Ban organic food! It has killed more Americans than 50 caliber sniper rifles.

Sorry, washed my hands of Kali when I left in '96. Got my own battles here in Colorado. Have to choose my battles don't you know.

However, I think that it will be overturned in Federal Court - not state. Again, it will take forever to get there.

Do agree that a Constitutional Amendment would help things out a bunch, but don't think it will pass without a huge replacement of the pols.

Just my .02

I jokingly respond: "Hey, they've gotta step out of those armored limousines sometime. No need to be 'over-gunned'". ;-P

Ummm, excuse me, .50 rifles have been available since before the founding of America. That's right .50 cal BLACK POWDER rifles - aka. Kentucky Long Rifle. Heck, in some states it is the MINIMUM you can use to hunt elk.

Now before you get all upset, I know the difference. My point being is that I doubt the motion that was passed made any provisions between the two.

Oh, by the way, you can get .50 pistols as well. Wonder if the city considered that little factoid in their law.

If it weren't so sad, it would be funny.

A-yep. It's our job as free men to ensure that they all wind up at the end of a rope first; a rope they have themselves woven.

Have you ever heard a 50 cal round go off? It would definately kill the intended victim, but EVERYONE would know where you are.

Probably not an APC.
But I sure it would wreak havoc on anything less.
Then of course I have never looked to see if any AP ammo is made for it.

But with it already costing me up to $5.00 every time I pull the trigger I would be afraid of the cost.

Someone tell me again how the leftist socialists are disappearing from the political scene. Some tell me again how gun control is a dead issue for the dems.

Why .50 calibers? It's simply divide and conquer, my good man. Divide and conquer.

"Last time I saw one, it had a $3000 tag on it."

The one I saw for sale in CA was $12,000. With scope, of course. Holster not included.

"I guess so they have gotten almost all .223s labeled as assualt weapons..."

No. That's the thing. The .223's and 7.69's are bad only if the rifle has a pistol grip and/or flash suppressor.
(BAD GUN! BAD GUN!)

My Ruger Mini will do everything the bad guns will do, but it's legal. (GOOOOOOD GUN.) So's the .308 Springfield M1A.

But.........Ah, don't get me started.
