Need PC Help - Accessing PC via Internet
me - vanity | 9-21-02 | PackerBoy

Posted on 09/21/2002 1:08:39 PM PDT by PackerBoy

Please forgive this vanity post, but Freepers are amongst the most knowledgeable people I know.

Does anyone know of free software that is available and can be used to access another PC via the Internet?

I am aware of, and own GoToMyPC, but I have been told there is a free program available that does the same thing.

Thanks much.

Try VNC. I use it on my local network, but have not tried it over the internet.

There are many programs to access another PC, however, their abilities may not be what you are wanting. Could you be more specific, for instance, if you are wanting to control another PC completely try PCAnywhere...but there is a fee.
If you are just wanting to download files, chat programs like ICQ and AIM offer this functionality.

That's a good question I did not answer. Sorry.

I want to be able to use the other PC as if I am there ... to access files, type and print a letter, read and respond to email, check my Outlook Calndar, etc. -- all the stuff you can do with GoToMyPC.

I just want to be able to have nmore users -- and GoToMyPC is pretty expensive (over $400 a year for 4 people).

Microsoft Net Meeting has a remote desktop sharing feature, as well as file transfer.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/NetMeeting/Features/RDS/default.ASP

Remote Desktop Sharing

Remote Desktop Sharing lets users call a remote computer to access its shared desktop and applications.

With Remote Desktop Sharing, you can:

Operate your office computer from home or vice versa.

Use a secure connection and a password to access the remote desktop, files and programs.

Protect your computer while using RDS with a password-protected screensaver.

It depends what you need. I exchange files among my computers in different places by uploading them to the internet (Microsoft Communities gives you free private storage) and then downloading them when I get to the other computer.

Check this out. $400 a year seems a little too expensive to me, too. Note there is one program here that's only $89, and has a much higher user rating. The only free programs that I know of are Telnet apps. You might want to check some of those out on c|net. There are a zillion of them.

Actually, IncredisoftRemote, is only $35 and has a 95% user rating, out of a couple of thousand users.

If you look at the reviews, it looks like there might be a little bogus self promotion going on. But thanks for the suggestion; I will ask around to see if anyone I know has used it.

Does anyone know of free software that is available and can be used to access another PC via the Internet?

Microsoft Windows has several built-in security holes that will allow you to gain complete control over a user’s system. They are included free with Windows.

I am no hacker, so this might be hard for me to do. You crack me up.

Yes, you can download some flavors of Linux for free. More robust, packaged Linux versions are available for purchase at any computer store for less than any Microsoft OS.

WinVNC is free and works great. Just install the software in app mode on the machine you're accessing, setup a password, and then log in from the client via IP address.
