Probably the onboard Quasar System... but that's top secret hush-hush... so don't tell anyone...

Not only that, but I took this photo from Burbank. My roommate called me from 40 miles away and said he was right under it when it happened, and he was scared sh--less. He said it looked like a slow moving firework that even exploded slowly, spreading this odd light everywhere. I watched, and it just hung there for a good long while.

Seems common enough. Firings from facilities in and around Lompoc around sunset look like that. Nothing unusual, in other words.

Its a solid fueled rocket launched from Vandenberg just like they have been doing for 25 years. I hope its a spy camera that can see Sadam sneaking those missles around at night.

I saw that missile from Yuba City which is about 40 miles north of Sacramento. No doubt it was fired from Vandenburg AFB.
Pretty cool.

A friend called me in Central California, she saw it too. By the time I got the call, it was gone. I have seen missiles from Vandenburg several times, it does last a good long time.

Call Art Bell, buddy - use the wildcard line.

Why did it not dissipate for ten minutes?
Low wind speed at altitude?

The sight literally stopped traffic.

Nice pic! I used to live in Lompoc, oh, 30 years ago. I used to watch missles launch, even some that were destroyed shortly after launch. Then you could find neat stuff on the beach!

Is there an official time limit?
Shuttle launches here in Florida leave trails that last a long time.

I'm reading FReepers say that this sort of thing is common out there in California, but looking at the photo, I wonder how many folks "got right with Jesus" tonight...

Could it be Aurora Borealis? A bit south, but not impossible.

Kind of looks like Northern Lights like what we have in Alaska, only not nearly so pretty.

Several years ago at an office Christmas party sever of us stepped outside for a while. Suddenly we saw what looked like a large, slow moving meteor slow moving across the sky. Just as it got directly overhead it split into 5 ot six fingers of sparks. We were thinking it was the end of the world and those were MIRV's. It took about fifteen minutes for them to disapear at the horizon without mushroom clouds or bright flashes in the distance. When we went back into the party they wanted know what we were smokin' outside. Turns out it was a large Soviet satelite prematurely falling out of orbit. There are pictures on the web somewhere.
