Low wind speed at altitude?
Always good to ask someone named after a missle ;-)

Nice pic! I used to live in Lompoc, oh, 30 years ago. I used to watch missles launch, even some that were destroyed shortly after launch. Then you could find neat stuff on the beach!

Is there an official time limit?
Shuttle launches here in Florida leave trails that last a long time.

"Not only that, but I took this photo from Burbank. My roommate called me from 40 miles away
and said he was right under it when it happened, and he was scared sh--less." you weren't in church sunday were you? the bulletin had a "memo" in it...
don't worry about the "signs in the heavens...", just practicing for the "tribulation"

I'm reading FReepers say that this sort of thing is common out there in California, but looking at the photo, I wonder how many folks "got right with Jesus" tonight...

How are you today, Tom? "I am functioning within my normal operational parameters."

Could it be Aurora Borealis? A bit south, but not impossible.

Not too odd, apparently. I have a nearly identical photo from "Webshots," which is an online screen-saver/wallpaper service. It's a pretty common thing, so don't go ballistic! :-D

A moose bit my sister once.
Moose bites can be nasty, mind you.

Kind of looks like Northern Lights like what we have in Alaska, only not nearly so pretty.

I've never seen a missile test conducted at night before. Scanned CNN and FOXNEWS but so far nothing published ...

I am not an expert but That doesn't look like a missile trail to me..it looks like that Nebula that the enterprise entered in Star Trak 2 when Khan was after Kirk

Several years ago at an office Christmas party sever of us stepped outside for a while. Suddenly we saw what looked like a large, slow moving meteor slow moving across the sky. Just as it got directly overhead it split into 5 ot six fingers of sparks. We were thinking it was the end of the world and those were MIRV's. It took about fifteen minutes for them to disapear at the horizon without mushroom clouds or bright flashes in the distance. When we went back into the party they wanted know what we were smokin' outside. Turns out it was a large Soviet satelite prematurely falling out of orbit. There are pictures on the web somewhere.

smackaho.com?

You have got the answer I think. It is likely that they just pulled a Wallops Island on you. They release dyes into the mid to upper atmosphere to study various physical parameters of the atmosphere.
