LOL!!! 60 km is about 37 miles. Too much atmosphere left for an orbiting object. So sad that such mal-educated people are around...

3) The Council of the City of Berkeley hereby declares that the space 60 kilometers and above the City of Berkeley is a space-based weapons free zone;

Not that it's anything more than idle curiosity, but when does this law go into effect?

Is this serious? hahaha. If so, someone please find an email address for whomever started this legislation. I must pass their information along to the appropriate parties. Hahahaha. I feel like I'm reading The Mad Onion.

What is Berkeley going to do if there is an orbiting ChiCom nuclear missile platform over it 59km?

I doubt they can shoot it down.

when does this law go into effect?

As soon as Berkeley's beam cannon is operational so they can vaporize anything in space that appears to violate their zoning ordinance.

If I ran the Navy, I would just have to have a flight of F-14s buzz the Berkeley City Hall at 6:00 AM for at least a month!

I am more interested in how they plan to enforce it, and what tax are they implementing to pay for it?

When will they declare the sun to be a nuclear-free zone? Better yet, ban the sun's rays from Berkeley because they are radiation from nuclear sources.

I think they will follow the example of the people with whom they most identify, the French.

It's not the first time California has tried a stunt like this -

July 18, 2001 -

Communications Satellite Tax Out Of This World

NEW YORK - A California plan to levy property taxes on satellites orbiting in outer space has been shot down.

The far-out concept came up when the tax assessor for Los Angeles County, Calif. was doing a routine audit of Hughes Electronics, the $7 billion company that owns DirecTV, the country's largest satellite TV broadcaster. The eight satellites in question may be worth about $100 million each, but they happen to be situated 22,300 miles above the equator--far beyond California's earthly confines.

"We saw the satellites on the books and wondered if they were taxable," says Los Angeles County Assessor Rick Auerbach, who says he's now reviled for simply trying to do his job. He put that question to the legal staff at the State Board of Equalization, which oversees all state assessors who advised him to pursue the issue, which then went to the board itself.
