Germany to ask for extradition of key al-Qaida official arrested in Pakistan

COPENHAGEN, Denmark - German Interior Minister Otto Schily said Saturday he will ask for the extradition of Ramzi Binalshibh, a key al-Qaida suspect arrested in Pakistan.

Speaking on the sidelines of the a European Union meeting, Schily said he would like to see Binalshibh tried in Germany, where he was believed to be part of the cell of hijackers that plotted the Sept. 11 attacks in Hamburg. "Germany will ask for the extradition," Schily said.

Binalshibh was among a group of suspected al-Qaida men arrested Wednesday in Karachi, Pakistan, according to U.S. authorities. He is known to have had close contact with terror pilots Mohamed Atta, Marwan al-Shehhi and Zaid Jarrah, and lived with Atta in a Hamburg apartment.

German Federal Prosecutor Kay Nehm has said Binalshibh was to have piloted the fourth plane on Sept. 11, but was unable to get a visa to the United States.

Also speaking at the EU ministers' meeting, where U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft was present, German Justice Minister Herta Daebler-Gmelin said German authorities will cooperate with others who may want custody of Binalshibh.

"There is no question we want to bring him before a German court and we will have to check the procedure," Daebler-Gmelin said. "We are very happy that they got him, and we will speak with others who want to have him - there is no reason for a dispute about this."

Should the United States seek to gain custody of Binalshibh, which seems likely, an extradition to Germany beforehand could raise serious legal snarls. Germany, like other EU partners, customarily has refused to send prisoners in its custody to countries where they could face the death penalty.

Two weeks ago, Germany told Washington it will not share evidence on Sept. 11 suspect Zacarias Moussaoui unless it is assured that it will not be used to secure a death penalty.

After they and their EU cohorts refuse to extradite suspects to the U.S. because of the possible use of the death penalty?!?

I don't think so!

Germany, Germany?

So isn't that the country that doesn't support taking out Iraq? Isn't that Gerhardt Schroder's government?

Maybe they want to reconsider their position...I expect they want them just so they won't get the death penalty here.

He's ours. If you socialist Krauts get a hold of him, you'll put him in jail for 2 years and subject him to sensitivity training. If we Americans get him, we will hang him by the neck until dead.

Does it matter that we have not indicted him? Does anyone know how this jurisdictional question works out?

Or Al Qaeda will pull a conventional hijack and the Germans will release him. That's what happened in 1972 after Black September hijacked a plane and demanded release of those responsible for the Olympic massacre.

West German PM Willy "Commie Lover" Brandt apparently knew that the hijacking was going to happen (see Sports Illustrated, which had an article on it just a few weeks ago), it was all a setup to avoid future attacks on German soil.

How about an inquisitional tribunal, followed by a lengthy period of torture and finally a slow painful death? Send the video to al-Jazeera. Works for me.

....you'll put hin in jail for 2 years.... I don't think so. The will more likely award ramzi the Iron Cross, a Villa in the Black Forrest area, and a few thousand marks pocket change.

This appears to be campaign posturing on the German Government's part. The current Socialist-Green Cooalition is sputtering and the center-rightish Christian Democrats is making a real race of it. Me-thinks that this was pandering towards the centerists to show that they were strong judicialists while showing the leftists that they would protect even ones like these from the evil USofA!

THIS JUST IN: AntiAmerican Antisemitic Germany had better decide to stay out of this,
or American just might decide that Germany is on the side of the Axis of Evil (again, for yet another World War)
as has always been Germany's way.

Yes. It works like this: We have more money and bigger guns.
