DENVER (AP) - A congressman was seeking deportation of a Mexican family after he read an article about how one son couldn't afford college because federal law bans financial aid for illegal immigrants.

Rep. Tom Tancredo said he contacted the Immigration and Naturalization Service and asked that Jesus Apodaca, 18, and any other undocumented relatives be deported.

If you make him legal, then you have to make the other 10 million legal also. This kid is not any different then any other illegal, and needs to return to Mexico.

Universities in Mexico have fine computer science programs.

Mexico can pay for his education.

Great idea, then he can bring the rest of his illegal family here too. All the cousins etc.

OR he could go back to where he came from and make a life for himself there instead of trying to sponge federal assistance that should be going to LEGAL American residents only.

Tom Tancredo is a smart guy. He knows that by reporting illegal aliens to the INS based on their media sob stories it will get these criminals to think twice about using the media as a tool to circumvent our immigration laws.

Maybe the party that offered to pay this kids tuition could transfer that offer to some kid on a reservation. I'm sure there are Native kids on reservations that would like to go to college, ditto inner city kids and kids in woefully poor rural appalachia.(all of whom are citizens and would have to register with selective service at 18, whereas this kid wouldn't IIRC)

That is rich. An official of the Mexican government characterizing Tancredo's actions an "arrogant use of power." Must not have spent much time in Mexico lately.

What I think arrogant is for Mexican consular officials to publicly criticize elected in officials and agencies in this country. Way out of line, inappropriate, and UNDIPLOMATIC. This Mexican is sitting on American soil saying, in essence, Americans have no right to enforce their own laws.

That said, Tancredo was really badly advised to have made such a call public. I can't argue with him calling the INS and saying, "Hey, might be a good idea for you to enforce the law." But the way he went about it merely makes himself look mean. Ten points for intentions; 1 point for execution.

Meanwhile, the larger message we are sending out is: come into our country illegally, make no bones about it, then whine in the major media when your kid can't get a free, all-bills-paid college education at taxpayer expense. And then expect no consequences whatsoever. Let's see, try going to Mexico, illegally and then demanding Mexican taxpayers provide you with a free elementary, secondary and college education, and see what happens.

But your right, though, it would be an undesreved reward. I left off the sarcasm tag. It's a privledge to live here, and to break laws here as a foreign national is disrespectful at the very least.

Nope, I'm not for passing new laws. A majority of illegals in Arizona are illegal because INS hasn't processed applications/extensions promptly.

If you are defending Big Brother's Paper Pushers, fine, go for it.

I want the INS to move the paper, and if they find no legal objections, then process those folks, get 'em legal, and get 'em into our tax burdened society!

They're illegal because they walked/ran over the border, not because their visas/green-cards expired. If their papers aren't ready they should stay the he$$ in MX.

Mexico gives no free college education to Americans who are illegally in Mexico. And I've heard numerous complaints from Americans and Mexicans both about how the poorly paid Mexican college professors down there are just as eager to try and SUBTLY extract bribes as their university administration bosses are to unjustly enrich themselves at students', taxpayers' and the overall university's expense. Meanwhile, the USA hosts around 20 million Mexicans whereas Mexico hosts maybe 50,000 of us "gringos". And when we're robbed or attacked down there, the cops only pay temporary attention (out of fear that they're being tape-recorded) but they promptly lose interest once they realize nobody powerful is observing.

Well the boy is pretty smart. Surely there must be a college in Mexico that will give him a scholarship. He is after all a citizen of that parasitic nation. Not a citizen of the United States.

I'm fresh out of compassion for these border busters. Michelle Malkin said the same thing last night. How legal immigrants who have to wait years and jump through hoops are outraged at those who are illegal. Who just pick up stakes and move here.

They should make them pay back what they owe the taxpayers for all the free education he got. It's their greed that got them caught, they weren't content with what they already took, they wanted more taxpayer dollars.

Wrong, it's a minority.

The majority of illegals in Arizona are illegal because they came here illegally, overstayed they legal length of stay or failed to file the proper paperwork.

While there are many problems in the INS, the MAJORITY of the problems are the aliens fault, for failure to comply with INS regulations.

Comfort said INS normally focuses on immigrants who have committed crimes or pose a national security threat.

And THAT'S the problem.
If you want to immigrate to the US go through the channels.
Otherwise, if you get caught you get deported.

No way is that true in a border state. Mexicans just crash our borders. Same for some Central Americans. They don't get visas to come here. You are abjectly misinformed.

In other places you will find many illegal aliens how came here legally via a visa and just stayed. And intended to do this from the get go. But not so in  a border state.

What has become of our country, when a U.S. Congressman can't get the INS to take action?

Ping to this discussion! AzJP, look at Marine Inspector's profile page. They're not coming here by LAX from MX as a rule, or even as an exception, perhaps as a rarity?
