Okay, there are three things I am dying to know.First of all what is "ping"? Second of all, what is "bump"? (I've heard alot of people use those terms on FR but never knew what it meant.) Third of all how do I "update my account" (it keeps telling me I can't put pictures on my profile until I "update my account", does it cost anything to "update" --how much?) and fourth of all, has anyone seen my brain?" oh wait! that was more than three questions! oh boy...

Ping is a UNIX command. You type "ping hostname" and if your computer can successfully reach that other computer (hostname) then you get a message back. It's shorthand for "make contact with someone".

A ping is used when you want to call your friends to the thread. You address the post to a friend ( or more) who may be interested in the thread.

I have a question too......isn't there a place on FR where I can store a picture to post? I did it once but forgot how...If it's still available...can someone tell us how to do that again?

Ping is a TCP/IP command. While TCP/IP started on UNIX, it is available on any operating system running TCP/IP.

I hope you've been saving your allowance. It costs about five million dollars to "update" your account.

Oh, good one - scare her why don't you - don't bother telling her that it can be in Monopoly money.

I thought it had something to do with pinging a sub using sonar...

But then I've got too many squids in the family...

Ping is a bookmark to place the POST in "my comments" for later reading. I thought that was what "ping" was doing for everyone.

This thread may help you some:
Lexicon of FreeRepublic - 4th Edition

As for the profile message... I dunno! Explain how you are getting that message...

I never saw that message though.

Neither have I, and I used to have a boatload of images on my profile page.

(Right now it's in a "spartan" phase)

Pinging is used to get someone elses attention to the thread.... It is like saying "HEY - Look over here!"

..."does it cost anything to "update" --how much?"

It's easy. Don't panic. Make out a check for five thousand dollars and mail it to Cyber Liberty, 1919 Wino Way, Wala Wala WA.

Your welcome!

Hey! Thanks for that link. Some of those definitions sure brought back memories.

But, I must admit, none of them brought back any memories of the night of June 2nd, 1981. The last recollection I have of that night was someone saying, "Dude! If you drink one more beer, you will have downed an entire case all by yourself!"

HAHAHAHA!

Yes, some memories are forever lost! They are our Jihari window. Things that other people know about us that we do not know ourselves!
