Editor's File | A letter to Coulter
Dear Ann Coulter:
You're fired.
It's not that extreme viewpoints are unwelcome on the opinion pages of the Centre Daily Times. All political viewpoints, from Cal Thomas on the right to Molly Ivins on the left, are welcome here.
But, we don't welcome haters, Ann, and that's what you are.
Well, you are either a hater or a hypocrite who calls names and spews enmity because you believe it will get your pretty face on television more or sell more copies of your best-selling books.
In either case, we won't be publishing your Friday column anymore . We decided not to publish a piece of yours a few weeks back because it was nothing more than a sexual history of some of your enemies -- i.e., private citizens who dared to give money to the Democrats.
I wrote a column about why we held the piece and told readers then that if you continued to cross the line, we'd can you.
Your Friday column, in which you declared that liberals are "no good," then trashed the entire Kennedy clan as a collection of "heroin addicts, convicted killers, cheaters, bottleggers and dissolute drunks," crossed that line. I'm not going to defend the Kennedy family or liberals; either group can argue with you if they'd like.
But, Ann, you're mean -- vicious, really -- which is why we do not believe that you in any way serve the public good.
On a late summer morning almost a year ago, all of us -- Republicans, Democrats and everyone else -- witnessed what hate is capable of.
Since that day, Americans have tried to remember that they are on the same side, regardless of differences in skin color, nation of origin, religion or political viewpoint. It has not always been easy because, more than ever, those who are different can seem more threatening. But we're trying because what we have in America is worth keeping.
And, Ann, you're not helping. You do nothing to elevate our spirits, to celebrate the great bond that holds us this unruly people together and makes us a nation.
Hate is easy; love is hard.
Our great nation gives you the freedom to hate all you want and even to make a buck off it if you can. But, even better, it gives us the right not to have to listen.
So, Ann, you're fired. I expect some of our readers are going to be mad at us over this, but we hope they'll understand that while we joyfully publish a wide spectrum of political and social viewpoints, we condemn hate where we find it.
You won't miss us much, Ann. Heck, you're rolling in money. And your fans can find your column on the Internet anyway.
We'll start looking for someone to replace you. It won't be easy because you sure are flashy and a lot of folks like flashy. But political conservatism has produced other columnists of merit whose ideas will provide subjects fit for public consumption and debate -- writers who do not believe those who disagree with them are traitors, or worse.
Sincerely,
Bob Unger, executive editor

I have to agree with Sean on this one, but I would add two adjectives, "brainwashed", and "gullible."
Ann knows in-the-beltway liberals, and is an in-the-beltway conservative. She knows nothing of mid-America. She's also playing to the camera.
My best friend was a dyed-in-the-wool born again Christian who faithfully voted for the RATS because she was a member of the teacher's union.
We agreed not to discuss politics. She was totally brainwashed by the union, as are many other teachers I know.
Gullible is a broader category, which embraces many different folks who look to the government to take care of them. Some are truly needy, many are just plain greedy.
True liberals in a position of power are EVIL, most liberals are just uninformed.
Betcha it was the shot at the Kennedys:
The adulterous drunk who cheated at Harvard and killed a girl at Chappaquiddick responded to these overtures by attacking Bush.
It's OK to take cheap shots at the Bushs (see "Her Snideness", Molly Ivins). But, in the journalistic fraternity, from the largest to the smallest market, from sea to shining sea, the Kennedys sit on Mount Olympus and are untouchable.
I expect you're talking about the hypocrisy of this editor who routinely runs columns about how conservatives are all genocide loving clan members who want to starve your children, throw your Grandma off her medicare and put arsenic in your water?
But never saw "hate" until now?
You mean that hypocrisy? Well, if so, you're right that really is pathetic. But sadly, ever so typical of liberals.
The liberals have a totally different agenda than we do and there is nothing to be gained by pretending that we are all politely the same!!
ROTFLMAO!
Exactly.
Unoriginal??? Ann is very quick-witted and comes up with original lines on a whim. Ann fights a good fight and besides it is impossible to hit a slug below the belt.
Yeah, Jim Jeffords, Arlen Specter, Jim Ryan, Olympia Snow, and John McCain are so much cooler </ sar-friggin-casm >
And both of its readers will no doubt be reconsidering their subscription. Especially Dave, who is the only one whose allowance isn't in arrears.
Ann Coulter: "Do I know you?"
That makes one of you.
Such as? Ann often appears hypocritical because of her satire and sarcasism. She calls them on their tactics and throws it back in their face.
Ann is fired, long live Ann.
It's not that Ann is that extreme, it's that she's a Conservative. And that means that she must couch her every word lest the truth be uttered in public.
Nobody bats an eyelash when Bush, Rumsfeld or some other administration target of the day is referenced with the name Hitler. It isn't a problem at all if heterosexuals are lambasted for thinking a--l sex is NOT just another viable lifestyle to be pumped into our children's heads. It doesn't matter that while we've been promoting Moslim teachings in our schools against decades of sanctimoney by the left, saying that Moslems are just grand even though their religion damns you, I and all Christians as infidels, that they almost unanimously remain silent as church mice on the events of 09/l1. God, let's not mention this. And please forgive me for evening mentioning that name in this political climate. I may get fired too.
"But, we don't welcome haters, Ann, and that's what you are." Well you'll forgive me Bob if for a minute there your open letter to Ann sounded a wee bit like hate to me. Show me one thing that Ann said that is off the mark partner. I think it would do you a world of good to have to validate your hate.
As for you not publishing Ann's column anymore, there are other venues for Anns views. I am glad they won't be published on your site any longer. That's just one less reason to drop by, a good idea in anyone's book when a person with such few comprehension skills as yourself wields so much power there.
As for sexual histories, we've seen a lot of that being swept under the carpet. Bill Cliniton's rapes are under there. So are Teddy's, Jack's, Bobbie's and a myriad of other dip stick leftists with the moral clartiy to be icons of the left. Why not sweep the rest of the crud under there right? No need for any strong feelings about any of this...
"But, Ann, you're mean -- vicious, really -- which is why we do not believe that you in any way serve the public good." You wouldn't know good if it reared up and bit you where the ex-pres used to get serviced while on the phone conducting our nation's business. But then that's under the carpet isn't it.
"On a late summer morning almost a year ago, all of us -- Republicans, Democrats and everyone else -- witnessed what hate is capable of. Since that day, Americans have tried to remember that they are on the same side, regardless of differences in skin color, nation of origin, religion or political viewpoint. It has not always been easy because, more than ever, those who are different can seem more threatening. But we're trying because what we have in America is worth keeping." In all my years of reading sanctimonious editoral tripe, this is perhaps the worst, most self-debasing example I've ever seen. How you could lower yourself to debase Ann utilizing a Pearl Harbor type event, is beyond me. Evidently you didn't have the brain power to understand that this tactic would be seen for the shallow, childish, irresponsible, slander that it was. And having been seen for what it was, you turn out to be the larger hater of the two, Ann and yourself. There was no card too low to play was there fella? What a sick person you must be to think this was appropriate.
Yes we did have a late summer morning surprise last year. It occurred about seven years after an attack on our Oklahoma City homeland, partially inspired and co-sponsored by the same people you are seeking to defend. The fact is we have had other hijack attempts since 09/11. There are still sleeper cells in our nation. Our government admits it. Everyone else admits it. And you in you unmitigated gall seek to pass of Moslim complicity by damning Ann. Well, good luck sir, it's gonna be a rude awakening the next time one of those sleeper cells awakens, but I'm sure you'll be able to spin that one for us also, you dim wit.
"It won't be easy because you..." Oh it'll be easy enough. I won't be shedding any tears for you. People who couch their words and praise folks who hate our gutts are a dime a dozen. Why not get some of those folks from A.N.S.W.E.R. that support all democrat causes, and recieve much support in return. They hate Israel, love the Palestinians, think Moslems are great, slander Christians, hate republicans openly, think the war against terrorism is the devil's doing, want Bush skewered because he's the world's premier terrorist, and have never seen a conservative candidate they could mouth the names of, without foaming at the lips. Come to think of it, they sound sortof like you do. Ah yes, the leftist ability to love neverendingly. Too bad Al Qaeda and the Taliban are their pet projects at the moment. Oh and I forgot, Saddam has a special place in their hearts too.
You think Ann is a hater. You really do lead a sheltered life my friend. I protest for the right often enough to know that it is the leftists in this nation that assult protesters that don't agree with them, not the other way around. You should get out more.

How about the hypocrisy of Ann Coulter?
In other words why worry about the camels when we can squint at the gnats.
It seems to me that liberals have been in the namecalling biz for years, if they get just a little of it back from Ann or anyone else than it is certainly no less than they deserve.
Furthermore, the things they say are slanderous lies. And there was not one lie in coulter's piece. Not one.
"Dear Mr. Editor:
So you you disapprove of Ann Coulter's hate. It's not hate, its a bit of strong medicine which the haters in our society, the ones trying to legislate our speach and thoughts through PC reform, deserve and should heed.
You should not just glance at her book - read it, study it - look for substantive flaws. There aren't any. Virtually all of her claims are footnoted and corroborated.
You should hold the leftists that holler "Nazi" as their standard adequate rejoinder to every conservative thought to Coulters standard of truth and veracity.
I don't know of you. I don't live in you area. I don't buy your paper.
But you should take what I say to heart. Newspapers all over this land are loosing readership because of editors with the same tunnel vision you exhibit. Your inability to mount an cogent argument to refute Coulters points causes you to take your ball and go home. In the arena of ideas that does not qualify as a great defense!
Cheers: Name/Address/e-mail
Uhhh how about a new tactic that doesn't involve accusing non-members of the Cult of Ann liberals, lefties, commies, etc.
Time and again here, we discuss the phenomenon of liberals of being lemmings. Here we have simple disagreement on style and coverage accorded to a columnist, no more, no less. Take care to not become too ironic.
What makes her funny is the extent of her exaggeration, as well as the kernal of truth in her writing.
I don't find her attractive, but love reading her articles, because she is entertaining. In one sense you are correct; she, like Rush Limbaugh, is not a deep thinker, but she doesn't purport to be. She is a bomb thrower, one who points out the outragousness of the oppositions views through exaggeration and humor.
Both her admirers and her critics seem to forget this.
