"Dump DAVIS" FReep ideas: statewide "Super SIMON" street theater puts Davis-in-a-Dumpster, NEW logo
"The Devil that you DO know": FReeper help needed for aggressive Gray Davis "street theater" ^ | September 1, 2002 | RonDog, Howie, antaresequity,Aunt Polgara, ElkGroveDan, Mama_Bear, d14truth, MeeknMing, Bob J, AnnaZ

Now is the time for all good FReepers
to come to the aid of the NEXT governor of California, Bill Simon!

IMHO, members of this forum need to "supplement" the traditional campaign now being conducted by the Simon team with the kind of "guerilla" tactics for which we are uniquely suited. Our overall STRATEGY should be to effectively communicate one simple message to the undecided "swing" voters in this state:

Gray Davis is CORRUPT, so we need to "Dump DAVIS!"

(lifesize Styrofoam cutouts courtesy of FReeper Howie)

and

(bumper stickers courtesy of FReeper antaresequity

The evidence against him is overwhelming, from Oracle and Metabolife, to dioxin dumping, plastic pipe and the prison workers, Gray Davis is for sale to the highest bidder. He is thoroughly unscrupulous, a money-grubbing poster boy for everything that is wrong with America. Corrupt politicians who sell political favors for cash CANNOT be trusted, and MUST not be re-elected.

We need to hammer home this message with images of Gray Davis as a bribe-taking, favor-granting, "Pay for Play" whore:

(political cartoon courtesy of Mike Ramirez, originally published August 20, 2002)
Copyright 2002 Los Angeles Times

The TACTICAL plan that I believe will be most effective in implementing this strategy is political "street theater" using FReepers dressed in costumes to represent larger-than-life cartoon characters for each candidate:

>

"Super SIMON"
...played by a FReeper wearing THIS costume:

from www.halloweencostumes4u.com

versus

"The Gray DIVA"
...played by another FReeper wearing THIS costume:

from www.costumes-4-halloween.com

...and THIS Beavis™ mask:

from www.easleys.com

Total cost for both costumes (with accessories) should be under $200, so that we could have MULTIPLE "morality plays" going on at "Dump DAVIS" FReeps across California.

The possibilities to generate media coverage are endless.

I can imagine promoting some kind of professional wrestling-type confrontation between these two colorful characters, ending everytime with "Super SIMON" stuffing the "Gray DIVA" into a giant garbage can - perhaps butt-first - and wheeling the Davis-in-a-Dumpster around on a handcart like the one used by movers to lift refrigerators. Perhaps there could be OTHER FReepers dressed as "Johns" who give him bribes, carrying signs like, "Dioxin Dumpers for Davis."

This kind of "eye candy" should be IRRESISTIBLE to TV news producers, wire service photo editors, talk radio hosts, and political commentators EVERYWHERE, in spite of their liberal bias. (The images will be too good to ignore!)

Simple, powerful IMAGES are the best way to communicate with the MTV generation, and THESE images will work.

ANY sign will work, but I am trying to focus on the main message:
"Dump DAVIS!"

Great! A Saturday freep is the best idea so those who work will be able to attend. We need a crowd from the entire state if possible.

Those who have never participated in freeps don't know what they are missing, and this is a real important event. California just cannot afford to reelect Davis!

Chadsworth and I are there! Mtngrl, I trust you can do a Saturday, that is if RonDog will give us travel time! :)

Here's a statement from Rev. Lou Sheldon, Traditional Families Coalition: "The responses to the Log Cabin survey did not sound like the Bill Simon I know for one very good reason — they were not written or approved by Bill Simon," he told AP. "I still strongly support Bill Simon for governor."

Thanks for the update!

In an effort to get some MAJOR media coverage for our Beverly Hilton FReep, here is an e-mail that I just sent to Mike Ramirez, cartoonist extraordinaire with the L.A. Times:

Hi, Mike - I love your "Gray Davis as a prostitute" cartoon from August 20, and would like your help to PROMOTE IT - through your high-powered connections in the media.

In fact, I love your work so much that I am bringing it to life - LIVE, in person - outside the Beverly Hilton on TUESDAY, September 17 - from noon to 2 pm - as part of a demonstration against Gray Davis, just before the gubernatorial debate between Bill Simon and the Green Party candidate Peter Camejo.
(This debate will kick off an "alternative media" EXPO sponsored by New California Media, featuring NBC-4 anchor Beverly White as the MC on opening night.)

In a CLASSIC case of "life imitating art," I will be wearing Halloween costume to simulate your masterful creation. (Just like the "Pageant of the Masters" in Laguna!)

Dressed as "Frank N. Furter," the transvestite from the Rocky Horror Picture Show, with a rubber mask of the cartoon character "Beavis" (of Beavis and Butthead fame). I will look REMARKABLY like the money-grubbing Gray Davis your cartoon, complete with a bright red turkey-feather boa, and massive wads of jumbo stage money stuffed into my purse and garter belts, carrying a sign that says, "Will work for... BRIBES!"

For a review of how this protest came about, check out the thread that I posted on the conservative news forum, FreeRepublic.com:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/742953/posts

(Your cartoon forms the core of our overall "DumpDAVIS" strategy, discussed throughout the thread, but the part about the Beverly Hilton protest starts at post #92.)

I would be HONORED if you could attend our event in person, but at minimum perhaps you could pull a few strings, and get us some media coverage - with your considerable talent as a successful conservative operating - with impunity? - in the belly of the liberal media beast, as it were. :o)

I am copying Beverly White's staff on this e-mail, as she is certainly welcome to visit us - on camera, or off - prior executing her duties as Mistress of Ceremonies. We should provide considerable "local color" for her monologue, representing as we do, FReepers from the Internet home of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, temporarily joining forces with the enviro-wackos of the always-interesting Green Party - to attack our common enemy, Gray Davis.
The Governor disdains to appear in public with a Green Party representative, but he may send his union thugs to attempt to break up our "DumpDAVIS" rally.

This will be "MUST SEE TV" - and it all started from a powerful image created by... Mike Ramirez, of the Los Angeles Times.

Thank you,
RonDog
(I gave him my REAL name, address and telephone number.)

Nice work RonDog.  Heh heh heh, nothing like flattery to get the job done.

Ramirez sure is a fresh breath of air after all those years of Conrad day in and day out.

His cartoons are ALMOST enough to make me want to subscribe to the Liberal Angeles Times. As a life-long wannabe cartoonist I admire his wonderfully detailed drawing style and sense of humour. He may be the best around today.

Nah...

In other news, I went yesterday to check out the venue, and spoke with both the Concierge of the Beverly Hilton and the Operations Manager of the Robinson's department store adjacent.
They both agree that most successful protests in the past have been held on the NORTH side of Wilshire, in a small park on either side of the intersection of Wilshire with Trenton Drive.

from
expedia.com

The SOUTH side of Wilshire may be better for media exposure, but it is officially private property, which I intend to respect.

Parking is expensive ($6/hour), but it is safe - in covered, guarded structures provided by both the Beverly Hilton and Robinson's.

To: RonDog; All
I have put together a series of 9 free images so anyone with a desktop printer can download them and make their own 24" x 36" poster. They go together like a jig-saw puzzle, pasted on a piece of cardboard, posterboard, or whatever, one can have a large, instant color poster ala #118. Email if you are interested!

regards Howie
