Two University of Hawaii research submarines on routine test dives today found a Japanese midget submarine sunk an hour before the 1941 aerial attack on Pearl Harbor, researchers said.

The two-man sub, sunk by a U.S. Navy destroyer, was the focus of a Fall 2000 National Geographic expedition headed by the team that located the wreckage of the Titanic, but was never found.

“The captain of this submarine was the first person to die. So the first casualty in the attack of Pearl Harbor was Japanese.”

So I take it that WWII was our fault after all?

There's one of these and other small subs on display at the US Navy Submarine school in New London, Conn.

Wiltshire said he isn’t sure who will take ownership of the sub. "This will be discussed between the governments of the United States and Japan," he said.

The sub was sunk in our sovereign waters while on a sneak attack mission; it's ours.

"The sub was sunk in our sovereign waters while on a sneak attack mission; it's ours."

Wrong-o. It is a war grave. Both the United States and Japan are signatories to a long-standing international agreement that you may not salvage another nation's sunken warships. If it had been captured on the surface, that is another matter.

You might remember that, back in the 1970's, Cousteau had to get the permission of the Japanese government to dive on the wrecked vessels at the bottom of Truk Lagoon. Same principle applies here.

I hope they have a joint U.S.-Japanese project similar to that which did the archaeological work on the C.S.S. Hunley. This is an important historical find.

*sigh*

There was NOTHING in that article that would lead anyone with the slightest bit of rational thought to conclude what you did.

The statement that the sub captain was the first casualty is to help point out what an historic find this is. And he's right, it is.

I'd like them to find the USS Ward, which sunk the midget sub, and was sunk 3 years later in a Kamikaze attack.
