WASHINGTON - The US government plans to remove weapons-grade uranium from another two dozen installations around the world in international operations similar to the dramatic extraction Thursday of more than 100 pounds of the nuclear material from Yugoslavia, officials said yesterday.

Two postings regarding the Yugoslav "take-back's" are here and here. The reports are overemphasize that it was a forceful seizure when actually it was agreed to by the Yugos. Meanwhile counter reports appear that Nuclear Threat Remains in Serbia Despite Shipment of Fuel to Russia.

This is all curious. A Ted Turner project called "Nuclear Threat Initiative" with Sam Nunn. Ted Turner as Superman saving the world from nuclear weapons. Where is the kryptonite? How long before we find problems with this search for the idealistic goal to put all the nuclear weapons away? Will all this activity bring about the very problem it serves to eliminate?

Now efforts to conceal materials will go up. And what will the Russians really do with the stuff? Who monitors that? And how easy wil it be to re-establish to weapons-grade material? Lots of questions only left to be discussed by Ted and company?

I just cannot get rid of the notion that these bleeding heart idealists are destined to creat the same kind of destructive mess that we have in the forests in the West given environmentalsits demands for no logging. And gun control creating gun-free killing zones.

Nuke-free killing zones?

So how much are we paying for the uranium? Someone's getting reimbursed big (American Taxpayer) bucks. Count on it.

They did not name the sites, saying they did not want to tip off terrorists.

I suspect they know who they are already. Not every run-of-the-mill terrorist camp has a 100 pounds of enriched uranium in the pantry. After news of this, you can bet they'll redouble their efforts to hide the "stash".

Of the 24, how many are in Iraq and Iran??? More than a couple dozen I'd guess. With most the rest in North Korea. Funny how that axis keeps showing up in things.

Well, at least its our tax dollars doing better (or even some) work than in most cases. I'd rather it go toward this than making payments to all the bums living down on our town's waterfront trying to figure out how to turn government checks into Mad Dog.
