California warns home schoolers

School officials in California are warning parents that they cannot educate their children at home unless they obtain professional teaching credentials.

Without the proper credentials, parents no longer can file required paperwork that would authorize them to home school their children, states a memo issued by the state Department of Education. As a result, those children not attending public schools would be considered "truant" by local school districts.

First, they tried for "year round school" here in Sonoma, CA, because in truth, the illegals would leave after Thanksgiving, and sometimes not return until February... we defeated this. Then, I was told I would be reported to the D.A. for having my kids away for 2 weeks, even though I was on independant study, so I told them to go for it, but to bring all of the illegal absence records for the migrants. Boy, that died quickly! They are losing money, but money they never should have recieved for illegals, and MISSPENT, on all things bilingual. Our kids can't pass the exit skills in this state, but more and more services are given away to illegals, even special after school tutors! I say let them try and fight the homeschoolers... they will lose.
The stated education board has its performance tracked on the internet. They are failing!

I have been saying for a while now that the problem is not that California has too few credentialed teachers, but that it has too many. The Credentialing program is more for indoctrination than it is to teach teachers how to be effective educators. I know because I am going through the process.

Non-credentialed parents are proving that fact every day and the school system doesn't like it. Too many teachers think it it their job to tell kids what to think (which is what they are taught in the credential program), rather than teach them how to think for themselves.

Most kids today, if you ask them (and I have), assume that thinking occurs without effort. That if you are awake and conscious of your surroundings, that you are thinking. They fail to realize, because they are not taught to, that thinking is an active excercise that requires focus and concentration.

Its all about feelings these days. Get an F? No problem as long as you feel good about it....

That reminds me of this school in California (obviously) that sought to ban games like cops and robbers and so forth because it 'made those kids who get caught develop self esteem issues.'

I was dumbfounded when i read that. Silliness epitomized!

You know, I have a feeling this is in reaction to the backlash at the Islam studies in public school as well as Dobson's pleas for parents to take thier children out. Since we know this has a lot to do with money and control, my feeling is that there is word that perhaps they are expecting a LOT more affidavits this year in response to Dobson's comments. This is the only effective way they could keep from loosing a hell of a lot more money this year. Mark my words, this is not meant to scare current homeschoolers, but those considering homeschooling since Dobson's recommendations.

I look forward to the day that this b*tch Mendoza and her co-conspirators are dragged through the streets on the way to their executions. ;^)

I realize this will never happen; instead, she will prosper and be rewarded with all kinds of taxpayer money. California children will continue to be re-educated by the marxist swine of the NEA. No one who counts will make any noise; it's all just business as usual in the campaign to make America Socialist.

The Socialists are still winning, you'll notice.

What you said! I'm so sick of watching PBS and other children's programming give kids praise for performing WAY below average....There's no recognition of personal goals or meeting challenges...And now Spelling bee's are off limits to home schooled children because they're considered ringers! Learning is a discipline and one that can reward one over their lifetime...but except for a gifted few who get into special classes, kids are just being taught how to psychoanalyze each other and work in groups to solve problems they KNOW are solvable...Where is the critical thinking? On the street figuring out how to deal crack cocaine without doing adult time! I think kids should be rewarded with money for completing and retaining hard coursework...now THAT would hold their attention! Fire ALL grief counselors and use their 100k salaries to reward A's and B's and your school's college placement will double...

I like that idea. I would also include all the redundant school administration bureaucrats that are taking up space and money waiting for retirement.

"Left California for Colorado in '96. Glad I did and will never go back."

Y'know, I have only been to California one time. That was to change planes at LAX.
When brought up in conversation, people always say how nice CA is, how wonderful, scenic, etc....
I still wont go. Too much socialism for my taste. Maybe if they removed about 85% of the population...I might go for a look around.

Another thing:

All parents are welcome to supplement their children's education with home instruction, but not substitute the education with uncredentialed home instruction."

Why? If uncredentialed parents should not be teaching kids, then they shouldn't be teaching them regardless of school enrollment. After all, what gives them the right to force their views on their children? < /sarcasm >

Bzzzzzzt!!! How about doing well in school because it's the RIGHT thing to do and for the LOVE of learning? &;-)

"Bzzzzzzt!!! How about doing well in school because it's the RIGHT thing to do and for the LOVE of learning? &;-)"

That is, of course the ideal... but we have to start by making it clear that there are tangible rewards to education. The average hormone-filled teenager isn't going to start loving learning without monetary inducement.

Then I was fortunate to have the "ideal" since I didn't have to dish out for good grades from my guys. Once in a while they would inquire, "Soandso got a dollar for every A." And my standard reply, which fulfilled a myriad of questions was, "We aren't the Whatevers." Explaining that some things are good because they are the RIGHT thing to do goes a long way. &;-)

If the government takes the same action as it does against car thieves and illegal immigrants, the homeschoolers have nothing to worry about.
