Two Turkish women look at Islamic bathing suits in a shop in Istanbul, Turkey, in this Aug. 9, 2002 photo. Islamic bathing suits fit loosely so as not to show off the outlines of women's body and are made of a synthetic material that dries quickly. The overwhelming majority of women at beaches in secular Turkey wear western-style bathing suits. (AP Photo/Osman Orsal)

>>That implies a woman wearing a practical bathing suit is choosing to be immodest.
Modesty is a relative concept.. To the German nudists in public German beaches Americans as silly, and to you, they're immodest..
Some women wear one piece bathing suits, because they consider the two peace immodest.
American males won't wear speedos to the pool or beach, their bathing suits are exactly what religious muslim men wear too, namely shorts.
I thought it looked pretty silly all those American males wearing trunks and the women in bikinis. It's a laugh really. I always wore speedos until I had to downgrade to trunks in the US, because everyone stared at me. Peer pressure, same as what makes these women wear gowns into the water.
Make sense?

I lived in Turkey for two years. While no expert in Turkish history, religion or politics, I would like to point out a few salient things.
First of all, this thread story was talking about Turkish women. Posters here need to make a few important distinctions and some history/background may be order ... among them, in 1923 Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was completely dedicated to modernizing his country. He directed his efforts to the enormous task of changing the fabric of the entire society by implementing political, economic, social and Linguistic reforms.
Convinced that the Turkish people could live in a world that would make a distinction between religious and government conduct, Ataturk eliminated Islam as an official of the Turkish state.Quick to adopt Western attitudes, Ataturk banned the wearing of religious vestments or insignia by all not holding a recognized religious office.
Today Turkey remains the only Islamic country where secularism is one of the basic principals of both the government and legal system.
Other reforms of Ataturk include changing the lunar calendar to the Gregorian calendar and abolishing use of the Arabic alphabet in favor of the Latin alphabet. Also, before Ataturk's reforms, Turks used only first names. It was the TGNA who fondly gave Mustafa Kemal the last name, Ataturk, which means "Father Turk." Shortly after, all Turks chose their family names.
Determined to raise the status of women, Ataturk encouraged a change in women's dress. Before the reforms, women wore clothes that completely concealed their bodies, including their faces and limbs. Almost immediately and unanimously women adopted a Westernized manner of dress.
Gradually Turkish society accepted women into various professions. Women were given full rights to vote in the 193Os. And by 1935, 17 women were elected to the Turkish parliament.
Turkey is our ally. We need to maintain that strategic relationship. Lumping all of Islam into one basket is smallminded, IMO. &;-)

Those pointy glasses made a comeback with the younger ladies awhile back.
Attractive young ladies with out the glasses with the glasses very homely.

Huh? I was laughing at your jokes up to now.. Yeah, they can't all work. In this case the ostensible points of satire were 1) the silly idea (prevalent on FR) that everything a Moslem does--in this case buying a swimsuit--is directed towards the destruction of Israel; 2) Turkish inflation (although I should have given it some more factors of ten); 3) the Islamic notion that the Palestinians are improving their lot with the suicide attacks.
Of course, explaining it is an admission of failure. But please tell me that somebody understood "Sale-ing to Byzantium". I thought that was the best one, but my wife insisted nobody would get it.

I guess once Gary Larson retired the manufacturers thought they were safe.

Sale-ing to Byzantium, could you have meant that the garment could be used to make a good sail?

The Ayotollah Khomeni started this whole mess; he used his nation's money to export radical Islamic ideas including the dress code. The Saudis, who wanted to be known as the real Moslem defenders; started to pour all kinds of money into Islamic dress codes/education/jihad.
Well, now that we know the source of most of this milatancy, are we getting ready to do any thing about Iran or Saudi Arabia, NO. Of cource, Iran is a big country, and can be a handful? Saudi Arabia has some Islamic shrines that we are too filthy to come near them? So what do you think we are going to do? Well, according to Bush, and his neocon friends, we should bomb Iraq, again! But Iraq is not a Moslem fanatic state, and did not plot against us! Well don't confuse me with facts. It is much easier then bombing Saudi Arabia, the real menace!

No, but perhaps something could be made out of that.
Sailing to Byzantium is one of the most famous poems of the 20th century; the women in the picture are attending a
sale in
Byzantium (AKA Istanbul). But there I go explaining again.
To: Physicist
Thanks for the link to the Yates poem. I did not know the piece, since I am not much into literature. Thanks again.

Hmmm. How many languages was it translated to? LOL! How many countries participate in the world series? nyuk nyuk.

No complaints here! I wish more women wore bathing suits that covered everything up. The American public is in SUCH bad shape that nobody wants to see our rolls hanging over the tops of our suits. Shame on us. I was watching people at a three day flea market I was doing last week and was amazed and somewhat disgusted at the way Americans treat their bodies. No wonder we're sick. Euuuuuuuu.
