Vanity: Forum Feature Request Thread
I, me, mine

Everyone,
If there's been this type of thread before, pointers would be appreciated.
I thought it might be useful to having running thread of user suggestions to improve the forum. There have been some loose discussions during the freepathons, but maybe it's better to have a dedicated thread.
Here are a few I came up with:
- restore the "more posts" link on the "my comments" and "find in forum" pages.
- Make the search function more intellegent, right now multiple words produce an "a OR b" search, it would be nice to have the option of an "a AND b" function. (Or be able to enclose in double-quotes)
- Clean up the topics selection page so there's not so much scrolling (maybe use drop-down boxes instead)
Here's a big upgrade that will probably never happen:
- Have some individual ability to filter out the various idiot posters and questionable new sources, a la Slashdot's karma system. Their code does an excellent job of toning down the noise, and make it easier to get to the meat of the discussion. See http://slashdot.org/faq/com-mod.shtml for more info

If we do this will we have to include victims of alien abductions? No, they'll be in the Anal Probe Forum, along with all stories about Barney Frank.
I also think we should have a Hijacked Thread Forum, where the mods can put all the threads that a bunch of posters have wrecked with stupid and irrelevant comments in a cheesy attempt to be funny.
That's my suggestion...

Why not just ban me instead? Much cleaner to have an FR "ghetto" - all the interesting people will be over there in short order. And the people who have suddenly found something new to say on the 84,357'th thread commemorating the 84,357'th day of Ted Maher's captivity in Monaco (Luxembourg? Grand Fenwick?) will have a nice, unpopulated forum in General News to discuss the marginal and the trite.

I'd appreciate a HELP page that just explains how everything works. For instance, if I'm on the "Latest Posts" page and click "Add Topic", what forum am I posting it to? I've posted a couple of articles, only to come back later and got a message "This has been moved to Chat". What the hell is "Chat"? I see no links for it.
Just how many forums are there and how do they overlap, if at all? Does the Latest Posts page display all of them, some or only one? I fear I'm missing stuff I might be interested in.
All I've seen help-wise is a "Posting Guidelines" link on the home page. Is there more information somewhere that I missed? If not, it needs to be done.

Best I can tell, those threads turn into a chat forum where they talk about recipes, movies they saw over the weekend, what books they've read recently, etc.

Can we get the post number listings at the top of the page (the way they are at the bottom) for those lazy people (bowing head) who hate scrolling all the way down to get to the bottom of the first page of a thread to get to the links for additional posts?
And (since I'm asking) can we get a link to (return to)Browse on the My Comments Page, when one logs in and after one updates the profile?
To: Brett66
Yes, but the problem remains. The forum needs to have one name, not two. Call it "Chat" or "General Interest," but pick one.

Auto-refresh for the article or post forum pages.
To: jenny65
Agreed. It took me a while to figure out what "pings" and "bumps" were, that I had freeper email, that I could edit my profile, etc.. Maybe that stuff is described somewhere, but even if it is, I couldn't find it. I still can't find quotes of the day. I would also like to see a search feature for the article/comments texts.

for those lazy people (bowing head) who hate scrolling all the way down to get to the bottom of the first page of a thread to get to the links for additional posts?Just press the "End" key on your keyboard. No scrolling required.

There's always an old timer who picks up on my material.

How about fixing "new posts to you" so that it doesn't clog up with all the "new posts FROM you" too?

I would like to see the return of the HTML tips that used to exist on the "Post Reply" composing page. In particular, I miss the "HREF" language for creating a link.
I know I could memorize it, but I don't feel like it.
