OUR REPUBLICAN HERITAGE

OUR REPUBLICAN HERITAGE!

The advance of human freedom -- the great achievement of our time, and the great hope of every time -- now depends on us. Our nation -- this generation -- will lift a dark threat of violence from our people and our future. We will rally the world to this cause by our efforts, by our courage. We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail.
President George W. Bush 2001

The Republican Party has a proud history. From its inception in the 1850s to the Presidency of George W. Bush today, the Grand Old Party (GOP) has stood throughout its history for equal rights for every American, free enterprise, economic growth, a strong defense, and the principles of democracy in the United States Constitution.

It all began in a Ripon, Wisconsin schoolhouse in March 1854 where anti-slavery activists called for the founding of a new political party - a political party dedicated to equal opportunity for all. The Republican Party was born.

The GOP's quick ascent to the forefront of national politics changed the very landscape of the United States. With President Lincoln at the helm, the United States defeated the Confederacy in the Civil War and preserved the union. Lincoln's Republican ideals of freedom for all began to heal the national rift between the North and the South.

Republicans championed equal rights for all Americans and, in particular, for African-Americans. The GOP passed the 13th amendment banning slavery, the 14th amendment extending the Bill of Rights to the states, and the 15th amendment according voting rights to African-Americans.

The early women's rights movement was solidly Republican. Nearly all suffragists, including Susan B. Anthony, favored the GOP. Prior to ratification of the 19th amendment, women could already vote in most predominantly Republican states.

The colorful Republican Theodore Roosevelt led the country into the twentieth century. With the President as its national spokesman, the Republican Party continued to keep up with the pace of history. While Roosevelt broke up many corporate monopolies, Republican majorities in Congress enacted such reforms as worker safety requirements, and pure food and drug laws.

In the 1950s and 1960s, it was again the Republican Party which faced the issue of race relations. Republican federal judge Frank Johnson overturned the law requiring blacks to sit in back of the bus. In 1957, Congress enacted the administration's landmark Civil Rights Act. Later that year, President Eisenhower used troops to enforce Brown v. Board of Education. Congressional Republicans overwhelmingly backed the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

In 1980, "Morning in America" dawned with an inspirational new leader, Ronald Reagan. After two terms as Governor of California, Reagan won the presidency, vowing to cut taxes, boost economic growth, and rebuild a neglected military. The success of the Reagan's agenda launched a decade of prosperity and defeated the global Communist threat.

The 1990s were an exciting time for the GOP. President George H. Bush led the charge against Iraqi aggression toward Kuwait and heralded in the post-Cold War era of democracy and free markets. In 1994, under the leadership of Newt Gingrich and Bob Dole, the Republican Party gained control of Congress for the first time in forty years. A Republican Congress enacted dramatic legislative accomplishments such as welfare reform leading to significant drops in welfare rolls nationwide, the first balanced budget in a generation, and historic tax cuts.

In response to the terrorist attacks against America, President George W. Bush proposed the most extensive reorganization of the federal government since the 1940s by creating the cabinet-level Department of Homeland Security. Today, under the leadership of President George W. Bush, the Republican Party is committed to extending hope and prosperity to all Americans. President Bush leads the fight against terrorism both at home and abroad to ensure a free and stable world for future generations of Americans.

You sure sound positive about the LA race. Guess with your crystal ball we cannot count on you for help to defeat Landrieu!

Thanks for stopping to bump! With your negative comments like yours, Freepers can see for themselves who wants to help and who wants to criticize in our campaign to help Republicans Take Back the Senate and Keep the House!

Keep me on your ping list, please, PhiKapMom.

I'm still trying to read the tea leaves regarding the Sooners. I hope for 13-0, but the tea leaves are muddy.

Was just ready to send you a Freep Mail thanks to the reminder by Floridu Voter. My computer crashed with my ping list on it so I am re-inventing the ping list so to speak. Good to see people I had on it show up on here! Making my job easier of re-inventing the list.

Thanks for your comments!

Lincoln was a Whig, and advocated economic policies (higher taxes, protective tarrifs, federal subsidies for business, a national bank and paper money (inflationary) and pork-barrel projects, etc.) that todays modern Republican Party opposes.

This just goes to show you that perhaps political ideology isn't absolute -- that there is a time and a place for everything. The Whig platform back in the 1840-1850s was simply this: national improvements, including a centralized banking system, construction of railroad networks (what you call "pork barrel" projects) -- whatever added to the physical and economic infrastructure of the nation to enhance the wealth of the nation. It was appropriate then, and put the US on a path which led to prosperity and the industrial revolution in the late 1800s, and made the US a world power by the turn of the Century. I don't begrudge them for any of this.

If Bill Clinton were a superhero, his name would be "The Stain."

Just wanted to bump that statement. It's a keeper!

As a born Louisianan who would love to see Landrieu sent home for good, I presently cannot help you because I live in California (but looking for a way out).

I know Louisiana politics extremely well and I can tell you that Louisiana has not had a credible Republican challenger for the senate for over a century. Why is that?

Maybe because Louisiana Republicans tend to take their advice from the RNC instead of listening to the people in Louisiana. The only viable state-wide Republicans run for governor not the senate.

I could have guessed that a post that referenced both Abraham Lincoln and George W. Bush in the same article would bring the Lincoln/Bush bashers out in force. Most of them are too busy still fighting the Civil War to provide any positive help in the political battles of 2002.

There have been some great articles in our papers about our offensive line which wasn't too good last year! Gives me great hope for this season. Have been waiting for your prediction! Sure wish I would have bet on your 2000 prediction -- We both could have retired!

Did you see about J.C. Watts pulling a hamstring while working out with the Redskins? He spoke to the Sooners the first morning of practice -- maybe he should have stayed here in Norman with the Sooner practices instead of going to the NFL! He has done some really great commercials for Tom Cole for his seat here in the 4th. Going to miss him in Congress!

That I will concur with -- the saying that "All Politics is Local" needs to be hammered home and the State parties need to become more forceful in making sure that very good Republican candidates are on the ballot for National offices in their state as well as State and local offices. Believe we have the better message -- now we need the candidates to hammer it home!

Used to live in SoCal (Yucaipa) when California was Republican and before the days of unleashed immigration. Good Luck out there and hope you can return to LA someday to help elect some Republicans and end the reign of the Democat Senators for LA!

Meek --

Thanks for the great picture of the President! This will go down as one of my favorite pictures. So glad to see him visiting so many States with key races in this Fall's election -- we need every bit of help we can get. That also includes Freepers getting out and volunteering for Republican candidates plus what we can do on here to spread the word on the Internet!

Someone just freep mailed me a site that has Bush/Cheney 2004 items on sale. Looks like some folks are getting a head start on 2004 already! No grass is growing under their feet this time around!

I do remember a War Department being created way back when.......just because you think history began the day you were born......believe me, it isn't true.

As for Reagan.....yes he cut taxes and created a booming economy, he also spent far far too much.
