[history]
The soon-to-retire Texan, a former economics professor, has combined a folksy charm with a consistent and passionate defense of tax cuts and limited government.
In 1994, he was a chief architect of the Contract With America, which helped Republicans win control of the House of Representatives for the first time in 40 years.

There are days when I drift momentarily to Dick Armey's position (it sets a bad precident for future Presidents). Then I drift back to reality.

I am neither convinced that we had a clear mandate in Kosovo, or in today's Iraq. I know that Saddam Hussein is a bad guy that I wish were gone. However, the case has not been made to justify an attack on his nation.
No he won't allow inspections. He hasn't for a number of years. The time to attack was when he first refused to allow them. Now out of the blue we want to attack. Why? What has changed. Tell me what it is, and I may agree. Don't tell me and I haven't any reason to accept that Hussein must go at this moment.
Good gravy, I want to support our nation's efforts. Give me a reason to. Is that too much to ask?

Who and what is this country to dictate to others on morals, truth and honesty. Please show me where these three reside in America.

What has changed. Tell me what it is, and I may agree. What I believe is that American spies within Saddam's inner circle, probably one of his family, have discovered that he plans to smuggle a nuclear weapon into the US and set it off. This has been communicated through the CIA to the President. That is what has changed, and obviously we can't reveal that we know this, because that would could our spy to get wasted.
To: DoughtyOne
Yes that is too much to ask,you are supposed to follow blindly.Hell yes you should ask that and many other questions about this decaying government and its corrupt politicians. Americans in general are as blind as any foreigners we look down upon.We no longer know the meaning of morals, truth and honesty because all the way from cradle to grave we are being brainwashed and probably never more to see this truth and honesty that was there in the early stages of the beginning of our country. The constitution no longer lives it has evolved and arrived
at the doorsteps to hell.

If you've been following the Iraq situation, you know that Iraq frequently violates the no-fly zones via aircraft, radar sites and troops. Some of these incursions have been extensive and deep into the forbidden zones.
Now, wouldn't you think this would be featured prominantly in an effort to demonstrate the need for corrective measures? I don't believe it would be hard at all to make the case for action. The fact is we haven't.
What is up with that? Even a pronouncement that classified information has come to light... could provide the justification. Well, that's my take.

I am sympathetic to your views. I happen to think we are in serious trouble.

In my humble opinion what has changed is that now with the weapon programs in Iraq anybody that has a beef with somebody can get a WMD or will be able to if they have the green. This is what I think Bush sees as the future. The genie will soon be out of the bottle and we are looking to keep in the cork. Weapons only once available to the super-powers will soon be the terrorists bread and butter and if this is not stopped it will make any and all past terrorist explosions look like a walk in the park.

My understanding is that this is going to wait until it is a little closer to the possible attack date. Due to the weather, it would be impossible to do this before October. I predict a major Presidential speech on the subject, followed by a full court press by Cheney, Powell, Rumsfeld, Rice and the leading Democrat supporters of such an action. You don't do this sort of thing while everybody is at the beach and not paying attention. A speech in connection with 9/11 observances would be good timing IMHO.
To: DoughtyOne
The timing on this war-with-Iraq issue is suspect, and I
don't trust our leadership sufficiently at this point.
I'm with Armey on this one - it just feels a bit un-American
to me as well.

You make a good arguement, but I'm not sure you're taking it to it's end conclusion. These weapons of mass destruction have to be delivered and utilized. If things are as bad as you say, wouldn't we be revoking the rights of the 70,000 educational facilities in our nation to facilitate foreign visas?
Where's the evidence that our government has taken any of this seriously? Have we put an end to illegal immigration? Have we deported everyone from middle-eastern terrorist states here on visas?
I am highly skeptical that our government is concerned with imminent actions from immigrants from abroad, be it Iraq or anywhere else.
To: this_ol_patriot
I might add, I think our government is totally wrong, and should alter these policies immediately.

Thanks. You could be right. I will keep my eyes open in the next few months.

Thanks.

I'm not talking nuke, I'm talking bacteria or virus, something so deadly that nukes pale against it. It's damn hard to make a nuke but good medical technology is available everywhere and no one ever said Iraqi and ex-Soviet scientists are dumb. I think it's almost ready and it's close. We don't want Iraq, we don't want Saddam, we want something he has and we don't know where the hell it is.
Too many movies, nuts, tin-foil? Maybe, but it doesn't matter, I have no say in the matter. But something's up, something entirely different that what we believe. Hey, we'll probably never know if we're successful anyway only if we fail.
To: DoughtyOne
Give me a reason to. Saddam Hussein is certainly evil and he has dangerous toys to play with. His removal falls under that ugly category of "somebody has to do it."
Knowing what we know now and given the chance, would we have pre-emptively taken out history's mass executioners -- Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot. et al ?? Probably...but our emotions may have gotten in the way. Who are we to play God?
Knowing what we know now would we still embrace socialism, collectivism, and the never-ending "government solutions" to problems even though it always leads to tyranny ?? Sure, we still believe the propaganda that there's a better world with the Democrats.
What's my point?
If your political views are "dependent" in nature, you're likely to search for propaganda that all is well. However, an analytical, sober mind will conclude Saddam must go.

Thanks for your comments. You may be right. I'm not sure what's up is in reaction to something out of the norm. We shall see. Take care.
