Quota beneficiary from Bakke case recently died. Know why the media's silent?

Chavis (who died this week) was a black physician admitted to the University of California-Davis medical school under a special racial-preference quota. In 1978, the U.S. Supreme Court later struck down the program after a landmark challenge by white applicant Allan Bakke (who had higher scores). After the media subsequently praised Chavis's medical career in comparison to Bakke's, Sen. Ted Kennedy called Chavis "a perfect example" of the need for lowering admissions standards in the name of racial diversity. What the New York Times (etcetera) never got around to reporting, though, is that the widely praised "difference" Chavis made in the lives of several young black women involved gruesome pain-and death-as a result of botched "body sculpting" operations at his clinic. An administrative law judge found Chavis guilty of gross negligence and incompetence in the treatment of three patients, and that notoriously callous doctor eventually lost his license. Had Bakke done the same, though, would the media have EVER let quota opponents live it down?

This recent event is particularly relevant in light of how the U.S. Supreme Court could revise its Bakke ruling of decades ago in the wake of the federal courts' recent split regarding race-based admissions quotas. Why won't the media amend its former praise of Chavis' supposedly stellar (but actually horrendous) career? And do truly qualified black professionals appreciate the bad name that "doctors" like Chavis give to all professionals of color?

I think you should have posted the entire article. It has some interesting details, like him being gunned down in an ice cream parlor 'robbery' by unknown assailants.

Hey if Ted Kennedy was giving out kudos - I'd get out of the line. He is a waste of fresh air.

From the article: "In 1998, the Medical Board of California suspended Chavis' license, warning of his "inability to perform some of the most basic duties required of a physician." In a statement filed by a psychiatrist, the state demonstrated Chavis' "poor impulse control and insensitivity to patients' pain." A tape recording of "horrific screaming" by patients in Chavis' office revealed the doctor responding callously: "Don't talk to the doctor while he is working" and "Liar, liar, pants on fire." "

Please excuse me while I go puke my guts out. Just think of all of the wonderfulness the affirmative action amen crowd has brought into the world.

Here's an interesting thought for ya.....Many corporations are under tremendous pressure today because of all the financial and accounting scandals....Two that have really, REALLY BIG problems are Merrill Lynch and AOL/TW...both are headed by blacks, Stan O'Neal and Richard Parsons, respectively, indeed the recent issue of Fortune listing the top 50 black executives had them # 1 & #2, I beleive...now supposeit turns out that these two guys are really the smartest of the bunch..they were the "PC" choices by the boards...maybe afraid to pass they over.....can they handle what's coming?....I woyldn't want to own stock in either company...neither inspires confidence..ML especially..O'Nreal forced out a lot of the top people, all first rate managers..to get his own cadre in place....and he's taken a very low profile lately while ML has been catching hell in front of the Senate committee......

How old would Chavis have been? Around 50? Why did he die so young? Was his death somehow connected with the failure of his career (drugs, alcohol, STDs)?

From the article, I believe Chavis died from a lead overdose he received at the ice-cream parlor ;>)

The shame of it is........I have worked /served with many wonderful, black professionals both in the military and in the business world who were truly credits to their organizations. I have seen others who were clearly "affirmative action" or thinly veiled affirmative action beneficiaries who were nothing short of abyssmal. "Unqualified" is a gross understatement. It's these types who do nothing but cast aspersions on blacks in their respective fields..........including those who were unfortunate enough to be VERY good at what they did but were immediately suspect due to their color.......and the image put forth by the incompetence of their affirmative action-promoted brethren.

I suppose what I'm trying (miserably) to say is that black America would absolutely, positively be much better off without affirmative action or anything resembling it: quotas of any kind, etc.

I heard her interviewed on the radio. This Chavez nearly killed several patients from massive bleeding while performing liposuction, and for two of them he took them back to his apartment for a couple days each until each had improved.

Similar to Chante Mallard(Fort Worth windshield murderer who let the homeless guy slowly die in her garage.)

I didn't want to risk getting FreeRepublic.com into potential copyright problems like it recently had. I did link to the entire article though.

"Why won't the media amend its former praise of Chavis' supposedly stellar (but actually horrendous) career? "

Why? Because the Dims would have to admit that their social experiment and revolution is a failure of epic proportions. Can't have that...the NWO might replace them.

I like Michelle Malkin. She is featured regularly in the Hartford Courant as the token conservative. And is the only one to bring any sense to that paper.

She had and editorial today blasting the enviro nazis.

I dont think Jewish World Review would mind.

The motion set by La Times and Wash. Post was purely ideological, and nothing to do with copyrights.

Im sure fellow freepers would agree?
