Which State is the Armpit of America?
Arthur Wildfire! March

Ok fellow freepers. The aristocracy had fun deciding which 'hick town' was the armpit of America. Naturally it had to be rural and conservative. A tad redneck.

They were way off the mark. I would have picked New York prior to 9-11. I mean, good grief. Hellery's husband pardoned bomb terrorists to get her elected, the scandal is exposed to every New Yorker and they elected her anyway? She was silent on the issue for at least a week. But well, perhaps NY had been reborn in blood. So, I'm tempted to give them a pass.

Arkansas? Could that be the armpit of America? The home of NationsBank, Tyson Chicken, Walmart, Web Hubbell, and the Big Creep himself?

Then there is the delightful state of New Jersy, which is batting a thousand at elected scandal-swamped senators. Not only the Torch, but also Corzine.

Some might choose South Dakota. Not only do they keep re-electing Timber Tom [also called Rushmore Daschle], but they also go three days without brushing their teeth. So many choices....

Yeah I used to think Jersey City was a dump until I started going to a church there down on 6th street. The area is pretty nice, and there seems to have been a vast improvement in the city, even from just a few years ago

I would have to nominate Newark, NJ as being the armpit of the country. Not only does Newark fit the geographic location of the armpit of the country, but the place is just one large ghetto. The only good part of Newark is Ironbound with the PNC Arts Center, the Business section, and the Portugese Restaurants. The park down by Sacred Heart Basicalla is nice, you can go and see all the cherry trees, but is the view really worth it if you have to risk getting shot? The last time I went to the Cathedral down in Newark I had guys trying to sell me Heroin when I was at a red light. In most cities you have to make an effort to get the attention of the Dealers, but not in Newark, they'll come right up to your car (if it wasn't so illegal they'd probably be model Capitalists.)

I would also have to say that Paterson, NJ probably ranks close to Newark as a city with very few redeeming qualities. I mean there's nothing there at all. They have the Paterson falls and all those turn of the century Factory buildings, but besides that does the city really have a reason for existing?

"Hey, Hollywood does have a few redeeming values. Namely, the Roxy and the Whiskey!"

Let's not forget the "House of Blues"

If Hollywood is the anus, what the hell is Berkley?

Wouldn't Berkley be the breast?

Oh, I forgot to mention the wind.

For the past few years, omaha nebraska has dethroned chicago as america's windiest city.

People in the great lakes region and the north east don't realize how brutal a winter can be. THere may not be as much snow in nebraska as the north eaterners are used to, but in nebraska you have wind, sleet, and ice storms along with the sub zero temperatures. By the end of january, the outdoors resembles the inside of a freezer that badly needs to be defrosted. There ain't as much put down in any givin storm, but it accumulates more over time because the wind and the frigid temps don't let any of it melt away one bit till summer.

And 10 inches of light fluffy snow is easy to deal with compared to an arctic winter wind storm that dumps half that many inches of sleet and ice on your world.

Who says that we clever Arkansans didn't intentionally get rid of Clinton? I know many people who voted for him for president just to get rid of him and Hellqueen. AND. . . .if there was no President Clinton, would there ever have been Free Republic? I submit that Clinton was not a bad Republican president in his basic policies, and a very bad Democratic president in his behaviour.

And Clinton is the gift that keeps on giving, to wit, the Hellqueen. Could any normal demon inspire so much conservative cohesiveness or so much unite the right?

Well, Bud, when I said "a few good conservatives", I knew it was more than could be counted on both hands. However, I didn't have the demographics at hand or I would have pinpointed it down.

Well, I don't know about what state, but unless things have changed in a major way, the town that is the armpit of NY State is Troy, NY. I was there in the late seventies, and it was a major-league sh**hole then. Maybe it has improved since then...

How can a state be an armpit? No state qualifies, IMHO.

However, states are inhabited by many armpits of varying degrees of pits.

I have never been to California. I know people who have visited and I have a great aunt who has lived there most of her life. Heck, I have never even been to Mobile. I have been to Montgomery a couple of times.

Well, then you must've been flying over when the tornados and icestorms weren't around. I'm not 100 percent sure of this, but I think the american great planes region is the only place in the world where you get thunder snow storms. You can have thunder, lighting, ice, snow, flash floods, and tornadoes all at once.

I can't go by states since there is a lot of regionalism within states. That said.

1. Washington DC
2. Hollywood(Henry Waxman)
3. Broward County, FL
4. Palm Beach County, FL
5. Montgomery County, MD
6. Cambridge, MA
7. Bezerkely, CA

I demand Mississippi have fair representation!!!

I hear the Mississippi Tourism Board has just started a new ad campaign, featuring the phrase, "Mississippi - come feel better about your own state."

Like I said, I was going from a socio-political point of view. Now, if the question had been about the people and places, I wouldn't have said anything.
