Police seize rocket launchers, Uzi from home

(New Haven-WTNH, Aug. 2, 2002 2:40 PM) _ Police seized several assault weapons and handguns Thursday from a man who has been served with a restraining order.

The weapons were seized from 55 Emily Road after authorities learned 31-year-old Dominic Simeone, the subject of the restraining order, had registered several weapons.

Included the cache of weapons were two rocket launchers, nine assault weapons including an Uzi and an AR-15, a dozen handguns, 78-boxes of ammunition.

There were also cases marked "explosive" and US Army 30mm ordinance which were seized.

A representative of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms met with New Haven police Friday to discuss the case.

Police say under department policy and state law, people who are issued restraining orders or protective orders cannot possess firearms.

Police say no charges have been filed.

Yep, good idea, register your guns. The guy follows the law completely, and has probably been screwed by an estranged wife or gilrfriend, and has them taken. He'll nevr get them back. They will disappear.

Hmmm, rocket launchers, (live or de-mil'd)? Also I'm by no means an expert but I don't believe the Army uses 30 mm ammo. They have the 25 mm gun on the Bradley. The Air Force uses a 30 mm round for the GAU-8 on the A-10 Warthog.

If the rocket launchers were real and he did not have them registered as destructive devices then there is a problem. As to the 30mm, I'm not clear on the possesion laws there. The rest of the stuff is entirely legal to possess. Nothing wrong with either having an AR-15 or an Uzi.

If I was him I'd be suing for a 2nd amendment violation regarding the registration issue.

Wow. Do you have to committ a crime to get a restraining order taken out against you? I thought those things were pretty liberally granted. If so, I'm amazed that is all it takes to remove your weapons. Hopefully this will get challenged and beaten.

I'm a CT resident.....there was a law passed a few years back, basically it goes like this.....if you're my next door neighbor and I have a bone to pick with you....all I have to say is "I heard him screaming at his wife last night........he's been actin' wack lately"....etc to the boys in blue.......they come in a day or two later and can take your legally owned fire arms away from you. It happened to my brother.

Are people required to register their guns in the USA?

Depends on where you live and what the gun is, ie: since 1934 fully automatic weapons have to be registered with the ATF (don't ask me what I think it stands for). In some jurisdictions all hand guns must be registered, like the Peoples Republic of New York. In others :), like Texas it would be unhealthy for politicians to suggest all guns be registered, lynchings have occurred for less. The Constution, 2nd amendment, guarantees citizens the right to keep and bear arms, but the government is trampling on it as it is many other god given rights. I believe the government would wet itself in joy to have all weapons registered, I also believe they are shaking in their boots at the thought of proposing it. With 80 million gun owners in America, the government must proceed slowly or risk an uprising that could prove fatal for politicians.

Not at all. Restraining orders are, in many states now, a de facto part of any divorce proceeding, and thanks to the Brady Act, confiscating all the firearms belonging to the divorcing parties is now an automatic part of that process. This is what the US vs. Emerson case (recently dismissed by a cowardly US Supreme Court at the behest of the Bush administration's DOJ) was all about.
