'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings

A Florida man claims to have designed a safety bullet which locks up a gun when it's accidentally fired.

Mike Worley says his simple invention takes gun safety to another level.

He came up with the idea after a local boy was shot in his elbow while showing off his dad's .357 Magnum.

The safety bullet can be hidden in the gun chamber and ejected quickly if the owner needs to fire a live bullet.

If the safety bullet is fired, it jams the chamber and locks the gun until the shell is removed with a special tool.

The News Herald reports Mr Worley has applied for a patent for his invention.

He says several companies are interested in his design, and one has started making a prototype.

Mr Worley, from Panama City, says he supports the use of guns and understands why people need a loaded gun as protection.

He said: "I think the safety bullet is a step in the right direction. I don't want fame and fortune. This is a simple device that takes safety to the next level."

Travis can we settle this once and for all, PLEASE! I agree with you totally. When a cop is on active duty or anyone that is in fear of their life they ususally have their gun either on them or near them. THEY DO NOT NEED THIS DEVICE! i Have said that over and over again.

This is for the family that stores their loaded gun other than near them. Place one in the chamber then if the kids find it and pull the trigger the gun is locked.

Thats what I am saying and I am sticking to my storey.

One of the things I am going to do is give every police officer that wants one, two. When he goes home and if he has kids put it in his gun unless he keeps it near his bed he does not need this.

Read back a few posts about the dead cop who relied on his training.

So your going to leave the chamber empty, use a trigger lock, what is your training? Shoot yourself in the foot. Drop the gun and shoot your neighbor. Be like Homer Simpson did you see the episode where he brought a gun home. Funny stuff.

Probebly the best ariticle I have read to date is the one called FIREARM STORAGE PATTERS IN THE US HOMES WITH CHILDREN.

The authors are Mark a Schuster, MD,PHD, Todd M. Franke PhD, Amy M. Bastian MPH and several others.

You're welcome. I see a lot of posts challenging you about your pro-gun bona fides. For the record -- and since you are identified by name, this record will follow you -- let us either confirm these slurs or put them to rest. Please answer because I happen to believe you are alright and there is nothing inherently evil about your device -- in fact it is rather creative.

1. Do you believe the Second Amendment applies to individual citizen firearms ownership?

2. Do you think Conceal Carry permits are a good idea, provided adequate controls exist to weed out those who have been committed to mental treatment, and those who are proven felons?

3. Would you restrict Conceal Carry permits further than the restrictions I have put in Number 2?

4. Do you believe a person has a right to own any semi-automatic rifle, pistol, or shotgun, regardless of magazine capacity or so-called "assault weapon" designation?

5. Are you of the opinion that a person has a right to use deadly force to stop an unwanted intruder, a robber, a rapist, or a physical assailant?

6. Would you place an upper limit on the number of firearms or amount of ammunition a person could keep at their house?

7. Do you think firearms of any nature should be registered with the state, local, or federal government?

8. Do you think firearms of any nature should be licensed for possession by the state, local, or federal government?

Answering these will go a long way to quelling the criticism you have received, especially since these answers will follow you well outside this web site.

If a guy can't remember if his gun is loaded should he even have one?

Did you miss the posts on dead cops who under extreme stress couldn't even remember which gun they had in their hand and died? Far worse is a HIDDEN "gun jammer" stuck in the chamber of the home defense gun 3 months ago. Under extreme stress, it WILL be forgotten, and result in a jammed gun in the face of extreme danger and get more folks killed than it saves.

More people have died by accidental shooting than died in Vietnam!

Crap. Half of those "accidents" were suicides made to look like accidents for insurance purposes. Many of them resulted from careless handling of loaded weapons which this gun jammer will not prevent. This HIDDEN gun jammer will kill more folks than it saves. Then their survivors will sue "Mike Worley, Inventor of the Safety Bullet".

Smart ones, dumb ones, old and young alike. You can't cure dumb with a HIDDEN gun jammer.

I must admit that I am a little bit surprised that you don't know about drop-tests of handguns for all handguns that are imported, and all handguns sold in California -- and even where this practice is not required by law, that most manufacturers perform rigorous drop-testing. Handguns are routinely evaluated by firearms magazines (I am friends with Dean Spier, who writes for these sort of magazines, for example) and if the mag gives a gun a thumbsdown rating on safety, sales are very seriously compromised.

As a result, many manufacturers are forced, by the market, to have good internal safety measures. Glock, for example, has a three-part internal safety mechanism meant to prevent all but intentional firings.

I'm going to keep an open mind. I think this might be appropriate for CERTAIN families or CERTAIN people. Without question it is very unlikely to make it into my arsenal, but then again, I am an NRA certified pistol, personal safety, and home safety instructor. So my safety sits between my ears.

The surprising thing is how all these young children get ahold of a gun. First thing they do is pull the trigger. About a month ago a cop was shot dead by his THREE YEAR OLD!!

And for what its worth, Travis McGee is the Real Deal. He is a Navy Seal, so he knows ways to kill you haven't even dreamed about yet. The only reason I mention this is, he's too modest to say, and I don't want you two to go head-to-head on hand-to-hand. Martial arts or not, he'd cream ya.
